I went to my internal medicine doctor this week. He said that an eunuch should be on an osteoporosis drug no matter how much calcium they take. I told him that I am on over 1200mg of calcium a day. He wants to put me on a drug. Has anyone else heard of this?

I did ask for a bone scan as well. He wanted the drug taken even if the bone scan was OK. Take the drug as preventive. I agree with you and not take the drug till a need is there.

It sounds to me like this doc is a $$$ chaser.

I would agree some sort of preventative measure is in order if the bone scan was positive.

Not here, Shortly after my castration, my physician scheduled me for a DEXA bone density scan, and said she would repeat it every two years. This was her standard practice with post-menopausal women, and she felt that was the proper program for a eunuch. (She does admit that I am her very first eunuch.)
Well, that first scan was quite OK, and so was the 2nd two years later. The 4th anniversary of my castration will be 14 may 2005. I am scheduled for my annual physical the day before. Yes, that is Friday the 13th. I assume that is when we will schedule my 3rd scan.
And she has said that IF one of the biannual bone density scans requires it, she will put me on one of those drugs. But those drugs do have side effects. And unless her patients really need it, she is reluctant to prescribe them. I have not heard of any other physician who regards those drugs as something to be taken "just in case".

OK Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become thin, weak, and easy to break.
Any eunuch that is not on some kind of HRT needs to get a bone scan every two years.
Every year if its positive.
I have Osteoporosis,
I take Fosomax once a week and calcium the other 6 days.
I will get my next bone scan on Apr 28th.
I have talked to my doctor about this and even if the result says that I am now again ok, I will continue to take Fosamax.
I look at it this way,
If your a eunuch, chemical or actual you need to get a bone scan once every two years.
If you're on HRT you should still get the scan every two years.
If you're like me and have had a positive bone scan get on Fosamax. I have been taking it for well over 2 years.
How long should you take this, that is a good question which I don't believe anybody really knows. I am going to continue taking Fosamax either way.
Two years from now if my scan shows great improvement I may then stop but not before. My doctor and I both agreed on this, the alternative is a possible broken bone, me I will take the pill once a week.
********************
Now if some of you remember another eunuch brought this up about 3 years ago. Everybody put in there opinion including me. I made a statement which I believed with every fiber of my body that if your taking 1200 to 1500 mgs of Calcium daily and walk at least a mile you should be ok.
I WAS WRONG.
This is not something to mess with. Get your scan every two years and if you're positive take your Fosamax.

I was surgically castrated on September 22, 2003. As a precaution, I had a bone density scan on October 25, 2004. This showed some osteoporosis. I now take one 70 mg Alendronic Acid tablet once a week and one tablet containing the equivalent of 600 mg calcium and 10 micrograms of colecalciferol (vitamin D3) twice a day.
I live in England. The tablets were prescribed by my doctor and are supplied by the pharmacist free of charge to me under our National Health Service.
Terry (a very contented eunuch)

I'm a non-castrated eunuch wannabe who nevertheless has osteoporosis. So I think you should at least keep tabs on your bone density. I take Fosamaz, and have not noticed any side effects, though of course everyone's body is different.

i am eunuch since dec 2003.
age 43.
bonescan 1 month later, result, heavy osteoporosis.testresults why i had it : hereditary and not because the castration, impossible after one months.
taken 1500 mg calcium and 600iu vitamine D a day.
also a new drug "evista" 2 times 60 mg a day.
after 6 months already gained 6 % so it works.
blood tests every 3 months, bonescan , every 6 months.
so is your bonescan negative , don't take fosamax out of prevention.
however, keep on taking does calcium tablets and your vitamines.
good luck to you
greetings marca

I'm a ballless guy receiving HRT. I was castrated 5 years ago (2days from now), but had commenced testosterone supplements prior to. I agree with most of the others that've replied. Tracking bone density is a very good idea. I had my last bone scan about 2 years ago, and the BC health official recommendation for people such as us that are at risk, especially as we age, is to repeat such scans every 2 years as a preventative measure. Whether intact or not and of course also dependent on age and hormone levels, our individual make-up seems to make us more or less vulnerable to osteoporosis. My bone density at this only test was 110 - 110% of the avg 21 y.o. female that's the standard for the test. Aside from the HRT, I maintain a very intense workout regime and have about 10% body fat, but consume no supplements or pharmaceuticals of any kind. I'm not opposed. I just don't ingest what's not necessary for health maintenance. I am interested in eunuch health and appreciate all the contributions to a thread such as this.

I did talk my doctor into getting me a bone density scan this month so I will have a bass line to know where I stand. Once I am though all of this I will drop this doctor. I give him a grade of "D" at best. I only need him a short time more.
