RENO, Nev. (AP) - A 50-year-old Reno man who was hospitalized after he castrated himself told police he learned of the procedure on the Internet and did so to lower his libido. The man, whose name was not released, called 911 at about 1:30 a.m. Monday and asked for help because he could not stop the bleeding from a self-castration operation, police said.
Reno police and medics responded to the man's home and he was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Washoe Medical Center officials cited privacy issues on why they could not release any information on the man, including his condition. But police said hospital officials confirmed Wednesday the man successfully castrated himself.
"The man obviously needs some sort of counseling," Reno police Lt. Ron Donnelly told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Sigh....there it is again, that attitude that anyone who wants to be castrated must be talked out of it by endless counseling.

well, let's be fair to the policeman - the man performed risky surgery on himself and then called the police to save him. From their point of view he really does need counseling. He took a big risk and when he couldn't stop the bleeding, they had to bail him out.
Risky business is risky business - it's fair for the police to complain about it.
It's like climbing up a tree and not being able to climb down. . .
Or walking out on thin ice,
Don't get me wrong, the guy wanted to lower his libido and succeeded. But he used the police and paramedics without their permission. . .

i would have to agree with dave and Andrew both here. if someone wants to castrate themself the society we live in would just not accept any reason short of Cancer in BOTH testicles or prostate cancer. Anything else and no way! Now if a woman has bad menstrual cramps they will do a Hyster in a minute. gofigure.
However, if someone is that self destructive that they would injure themself, even in an attempt to wright a preceived wrong, they probably need some counciling or at least some education so they know the risks the next time. So many here read fantacy and preceive it as fact.
i wish everybody well and hope for the best

What in idiot! It's hard to feel sorry for people who do such stupid and dangerous things, especially when Dr. Kimmel will do it for 2000 bux. I can only imagine how much the hospital fees are gonna be for this guy.

I'm not to the point of calling the guy "what an idiot" ... he did succeed in what he wanted. And he did have the brains to know when he was in danger. My point was more that we shouldn't be hard on the police. They were involuntarily enlisted in his effort. Their job is something else.
And it's not just $2000 -It's airfare and hotel for two people for a few days. WHy two people? Think what a hotel would do if you called room service asking for bandages...

For one thing, I would think that this fellow certainly will either file bankruptcy, losing his medical insurance, or get zocked with a huge ER bill that will be much more than a flight to Dr. Kimmell. That, and the little men in white with the nets probably already got him. Locally, I'm sure he'll be a laughing stock because it WILL get out in the town he's in.
However, before WE of ALL people start calling him crazy, etc., I think we need to take a step back and say, "Are we really that surprised?" How many of us have been right on the edge of doing what this fellow did? How many of us have turned to others close to us for support, and been met with ridicule?
Who are WE to say what was going through his mind at the time?
I will not judge this person. Nor should any of us.
I don't fault this guy a bit, other the fact that he should have paid more attention in 4th grade math class - and he's only one of millions that didn't!

Well,
All things in consideration, it still sounds to me like an episode of RENO 911

I'd definitely say that the guy needs counseling--at least. Even if we agree that society should validate castration as a form of elective surgery, no one would argue that it's right for everyone who's ever considered it for a moment or two. The cop said that the guy had wanted to "lower his libido." Well, what made him think it was too high? Had he groped his ten-year-old niece? Or was his wife in the habit of coming down with a headache every time he wanted her to go down? In the former case, he can't be faulted for considering castration; in the latter, he might have done better to dump the old bat.
