In her book Sex in History, (ISBN # 0-8128-8540-6) author Reay Tannahill mentions a few tidbits of information on feelings towards Eunuchs in Rome as well. I will post this as a follow-up to Jesus' mention of Roman Emporers and their feelings about Eunuchs in his latest posting.
It seems that not everyone was fond of the idea of castrated fellows as lovers, Page 249 : There are girls who adore unmanly eunuchs - so smooth,
So beardless to kiss, and no worry about abortions!
But the biggest thrill is one who was fully grown,
A lusty black-quilled male, before the surgeons
Went to work on his groin. Let the testicles ripen
And drop, fill out till they hang like two-pound weights:
Then what the surgeon chops will hurt nobody's trade
but the barber's.*
(Slave-dealers' boys are different: pathetically weak,
Ashamed of their empty bag, their lost little chickpeas.)
Look at that specimen - you could spot him a mile off,
Everyone knows him - displaying his well-endowed person
at the baths: Priapus might well be jealous. And yet
He's a eunuch. His mistress arranged it. So, let them sleep together. - Juvenal, in attacking the habits of Roman women.
*one effect of castration was to eliminate the growth of bodily hair*
Page 248 : Rome, too, had its "barbers". There, castration was favored not only by the priests of the new religions (Cybele) but, according to the satirists, by the lovers of certain enterprising ladies. The Emperor Domitian at last prohibited it, at the same time cannily imposing price control on such eunuchs as remained in the slave-dealers' hands.
Tannhill does not go into much detail on eunuchs throughout her book, but what she does cover is precise. She also makes several endnotes. Eunuchism in almost every culture is addressed, although there is no mention at all of current trends. On page 250-1, she mentions 4 methods of castrating a man or boy : He might be 'shaved' of both penis and testicles, or have only the testicles removed. Sometimes, in the case of a very young boy, the testicles were simply crushed, twisted or compressed, causing permanent injury to the seminal glands. Jesus mentions this as well in his recent post, although his book mentions damaging the testicles "in the cradle" until they disappear. And sometimes, only the penis was removed... There is also an illustration of the bronze castration clamp of circa 2nd or 3rd century AD.
Paolo
