Marked as Read...

Post by Robby (imported) »

Does anyone using the New Posts option suffer from the following anomaly?:

Once the new posts are presented, they are marked as read after reading one or many of the new posts, even though you have not read all of the new posts?

If you have experienced this anomaly, please post your experiences...

Thanks,

The only thing I have noticed, and written to VBulletin about, is that if you are on the main board, and you linger too long - say you get a call or go to the loo - when you come back, everything is marked read even though you never read it.

Also, after reading the posts, I find I have to go back in steps to the main board to get things to SHOW UP AS READ. Otherwise, for me, NOTHING gets marked as read.

For example, I have to go from the thread, to the forum, to the parent forum, to the main board. Otherwise, it's like I never read it. But, if I leave the main forum on with new posts showing, they'll ALL be read when I read ONE of them after some time.

I'm using IE 6.0.2800.xxxx in Windows 2000 Pro, by the way. Of course, it could have something to do with my cookie settings, but since EA is allowed and trusted, it shouldn't matter, right?

Hi Robby,

Yes it always happens that way for me. I thought that was normal. Oh well.

There is constant discussion of this topic over at vBulletin.com too. I am not sure there's an ideal way to do this without literally making a database entry for each person each time they view a post- which would involve quite a bit of resources.

The current system works "ok" if you understand it. It's based on the unique session ID that vBulletin creates for you when you log on (or view any forum page if you have auto-login turned on).

From the first time that page loads you have 15 minutes during which the new posts will show up as "new". Past that your "last visit" time gets reset to the current time and thus a new posts search will result in nothing being returned.

vBulletin perhaps should include a "keep as new" button somewhere for cases where you open the forum then get called away. Unfortunately there's not a lot we can do about it. vBulletin is a pretty complex program and we have thus far tried to stay away from installing "hacks" in the source code because it makes it much more difficult to upgrade the software when new versions, bug fixes, etc. get released because when that happens it over-writes all the "hacks" and they have to be re-applied.

Tal and I both frequent the vBulletin board and monitor what they are up to and throw in our own suggestions from time to time.

The "new posts" problem is one that's at the top of the list as far as requests from vBulletin's customers. It's just a difficult technical problem to overcome.
