Hi everyone,

Getting ready to file for last year, the year I was castrated. I was wondering if anyone would offer their opinion about if the expense is deductible. Although I knew it was best for my mental health, and it was, I didn't receive an Rx for the procedure.

Appreciate your opinions,

Michael

If it was performed by a legitimate doctor and you have a proper receipt (like any other medical expense) you should not have a problem.

No RX needed. As long you have the proper medical receipt, yoir tax advisor should have no qualms in putting it in under medical expenses. If you paid by check or credit card, you have additional proof for the IRS.

Hi,

Since writing the question I read the IRS pub on the subject of medical expense deductibility.

I just read the IRS Pub and it seems to confirm that it is a deductible item, including lodging and transport. The only caveat is that only those costs above 7.5% of your AGI are deductible.

This is what it says:

Sterilization

You can include in medical expenses the cost of a legal sterilization (a legally performed operation to make a person unable to have children).

Transportation

You can include: Bus, taxi, train, or plane fares or ambulance service

Yours,

michael
