Photo by Penticton Western staff PENTICTON (BC Newspaper Group) - A Penticton man who cut off his own penis and testicles was recovering in Kelowna General Hospital Thursday.
The man was found Wednesday afternoon naked and bleeding near a construction site in the Winnipeg Street and Churchill Avenue area, said Cst. Warren Kraft.
Ute Hilligweg, administrative director at KGH, said the man's family has requested that no information about his medical condition be released.
"He is still with us. That is all I can say," she said.
More information could become available at a later date, she said.
The man, reported to be in his early 30s, was taken by ambulance to Penticton Regional Hospital, then transferred to Kelowna.
A search of the man's Burnaby Avenue residence confirmed the mutilation and led to the recovery of his penis and testicles.
The man was earlier seen running naked through the area around Maple Street and Heales Avenue.
Police say he was heard yelling religious statements.
An eyewitness, who requested his name not be used, said he saw the man heading west on Heales Avenue.
Standing about three metres away from his stopped vehicle, the witness said the man was bleeding "profusely" from the genital area.
The witness slowly drove his car nearer the man before calling 911. The witness then met a friend and they actively searched the area for the man whom they could hear, but not see.
They eventually travelled west along Churchill Avenue to Winnipeg Street, where they witnessed police officers subduing the man who was heading northbound on Winnipeg Street.
