Currently, there is a 'virus war' going on between two different groups on
the Internet - spammers and technogeeks... Each is trying to outdo the other in terms of virus creation and distribution. In some cases, as many as 8 or 9 variants are showing up within hours of each other, all of which are
dangerous to one degree or another.
Several of the viruses are generating emails that would indicate they're
from a network or systems administrator warning you that you have a virus on your machine and to click on the attachment and enter the serial number to activate the "anti-virus" protection.
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES OPEN THE ATTACHMENT!!!!!!!
Delete it and make sure that you delete any associated attachments to it.
Be careful, it's a JUNGLE out there in Cyberland...

On this subject -- that literally threatens to cripple the Eunuch Archive and many other sites we visit in our non-castration personas -- one literally cannot be too careful. Everyone: install an anti-virus firewall that also includes protection against contaminated outgoing messages (in case without you knowing it your PC has been turned into a zombie virus spreader)! It's like safe sex: a moral responsability.

I recently got this virus in the mail:

[Your display is set for the "iso-8859-1" character set ]
[Some characters may be displayed incorrectly ]
YOU HAVE JUST RECEIVED THE UNIX VIRUS!
There has never been a documented case of a virus on UNIX;
therefore, this virus is forced to operate on the honor system:
If you are running a variant of UNIX or Linux:
1. Please forward this message to everyone you know, and
2. Please delete several of your files at random.
Thank you for your participation.

Tomas,
I don't know if it makes me a virus, but some years ago, whilst logged on as root in the / directory I typed in rm -r *. What made it worse was that I was on a client site and had just spent about 5 hours installing and configuring their bespoke application on a brand new machine.
Oh well, it is not the first time I have had egg all over my face.
LOL
