Damage always accures and is communitive, for some it's only just the act of banding can cause problems but for others hours before any real damage will happen.

in reality, five to ten minutes to be safe.
In twenty minutes some damage will occur.
In an hour the damage willbe permanent. Just how bad the damage is depends on your testicles.
In four hours, if you can take the pain, there will be significant damage.
If you drug yourself and pass out overnight (longer than four hours) then you better prepare to go to the hospital with a good story because your testicles will be poisonous with gangrene and a doctor will have to remove them. At this point, your risking your life. Expect phsychiatrists and other doctors to examine you and maybe commit you for a few days to two weeks.

There are medical studies under the topic of "testicle torsion" that show the chance of "salvageability" of testicles after the blood supply has been restricted for various periods of time.
You should do your own searches on the subject, but if I remember correctly you need to band for at least 8 hours just to have a 50% chance of your testicles dying. 12 or more hours seemed to start to guarantee castration.
However, keep in mind that banding also bands the scrotum in addition to the testicles. This is a serious problem as the scrotum will also be damaged and cause problems.
I suggest that if you plan to do a long-term banding that you band long enough to ensure castration (probably 24 hours) then check yourself into the hospital for proper care of the potential necrotic tissue problems.
Of course it is very difficult to keep the bands on that long, although a couple people have indeed been successful. It may be possible that with a friend watching you you might have a better chance of following through with it.

Banding does not remain 'secret'.
Over a few years a band of skin around the top of my scrotum gradually became white due to longer term blood starvation.
This happened after long after the banding, not that I'm worried! And yes they are dead.

What?....Oh! THAT kind of banding?
Never mind.

What for ? Maybe on the odd occasion when I am annoyed by their remaining presence and in the misgiuded hope that they will go away; but certainly not for the thrill of it that I once had when doing so, or when bolt flattening them between two steel plates to admire how flat I could make them whilst masturbating - like 3mm.

I played bagpipes in a pipe corps and marching band in college.
And I remember that PDQ Bach has a "concerto for banned instruments" that includes the "Lasso D'Amore" ... It is "banned" and not "band" by the way.
Can you still do eight to five?
