Lets see. We need to export our jobs to India in order to save money. We need to pay artificially high prices for oil. That helps produce more oil. We need to pay high prices for drugs to keep our pension funds rich and full--so that we can pay out most of our pensions to pay for drugs. We have a free trade agreement with China so that they can keep their current artificially low to steal jobs from Mexico that Mexico from had taken from the United States. Then, of course, we have the Evil Empire of Wal-Mart to close our neighbors's stores.

I'll agree with you about everything but the oil, Softee. I work in that business, not for an oil company but for an equipment supplier, and I can tell you from personal experience that they deserve every penny they make. Except for in the Middle East, all the "easy" oil is pretty much gone now, and it's expensive as hell to recover what's left in the old fields. Finding new fields is not only expensive in itself, but often dangerous, and they all seem to be located in the absolute assholes of the world. (Khazakstan, anyone? How about Nigeria? I hear northeastern Siberia is lovely this time of year.)
I take my hat off to the people who work in those places, even if they do make top dollar -- yet another cost to the oil companies. Then there's security, transportation, refining -- hell, a decent sized refinery can cost in the tens of billions -- more transportation...well you get the idea. Trust me, it just ain't an easy business. That's some of the hardest-earned money you'll ever see. Considering that some brands of bottled water cost twice as much per gallon, I'd say it's a damned good bargain, too.

I meant the Middle East and some other members of the cartel! Probably oil ought to cost more than it does. I should have been more explicit. Thus, I have to agree with you.
A long time ago, I worked on a rig in Louisiana (near the LSU campus, of all places) We drilled for natural gas at deep levels (14,000 feet). It was hard and dangerous work with a lot of money invested. Of course, I earned good money on the job. I work near a large refinary and live near another one.

Re: the feds are only looking out for us
What appears to be happening, with respect to a number of drugs, is that drug firms are using the U.S. market, which they seem to consider a "captive market," as one in which they can charge high prices to recover research and development costs--not only for drugs which and widely prescribed and successful, but also for drugs that turn out to be ineffective or unusable. At the same time, the drug companies sell their products elsewhere in the world at prices which are closer to to the actual current cost of production. On the one hand, this looks to be very unfair. On the other hand, it does give the drug firms both incentive and capital to do a lot of R and D, and firms with a big presence in the U.S. market, do produce a disproportionate number of the new and effective drugs which are introduced. It's hard to tell whether the R and D would be carried out if prices were substantially lower.

The Medicare bill which just passed includes a process to expedite review and approval of Canadian drugs for sale in the U.S. It's not all an evil conspiracy - Congress heard and has been responsive.
