I just received in the mail a CD entitled "Alessandro Moreschi, The Last Castrato." It is a re-mastered version of the original recordings of Moreschi made in 1902 and 1904 at the Vatican.

I stumbled on this CD quite by accident - it is available on Amazon.com.

The first few tracks were to say the least, awful! The recording quality is surprisingly good, but Moreschi's singing leaves a little something to be desired. But track 12 is his version of "Ave Maria," and it is GOOD! If nothing else, he can certainly hit the high's.

This is certainly not a CD I will be listening to every day, but I am glad I bought it. It is a piece of history, and better left there, but it gives one a feel for why the Italian castrati were so popular for over two hunderd years. There is a very interesting writeup included with the CD. This writeup suggests, among other things, that Moreschi was far better than the poor quality recording and accompaniment would suggest. Well, I certainly hope so!
