Has anyone got a copy of this, it is a great book by Bremmer, Johan. Please search your local Library, and post excerpts. I have only read one case study but I beleive there are 100's about boys that have been castrate. It could be Bremer ?

This link cites castration as a punishment to crimes and uses this book by Bremer as a source. Bremer's book is mainly concerned with castration to induce asexualization for punishements of sex crimes. No listings show anything in the book having to do with boys, medical reasons for castration of boys, etc.; it only deals with the criminal aspects.

An in-depth discussion of the uses and reported outcomes of castration as a therapeutic measure to control putative sex offenders -- including male homosexuals -- in Norway, 1935-1949. The first chapter reviews the development of laws in the United States and Europe permitting castration. In addition, it provides a summary of earlier follow-up studies, among them German publications dating from 1938 to 1944 reporting on compulsory and so-called voluntary castration during the Third Reich.

Bremer notes that the Nazi law authorizing judges to order punitive castration was imposed in Norway during the German occupation of 1940-45, but claims that neither the frequency nor the circumstances of use of castration in Norway changed significantly from the pre-Occupation period due to resistance by Norwegian doctors. As a result, he does not break out by year the cases which he tabulates, making it impossible to determine from his statistics if any of the castrations of male homosexuals in Norway took place under Nazi rule.

While Bremer's language is awkward, and while his focus is psychiatric and behavioral, this book is nonetheless of value as one of the first in English to discuss uses of castration during the Nazi period. By documenting the pre-Nazi movement for castration of sex offenders, as well as employment of the procedure outside of Germany, it also serves as a reminder that at least some of the gruesome legal and medical interventions against homosexuals under the Nazis must be seen as part of a broader historical and cultural phenomenon.

VBulletin seems to have some strange quirks. Sometimes a posting to this board disappears into the aether without a trace as soon as a message is sent to me that it is in the holding tank and I need to check it. Other times it slips through onto the board without checking.

Jan_ba2003’s post is of this latter type. When I received the message about it, I decided that it was inappropriate on THIS board, but should be on Eunuch Central. The book is a significant one and does deserve a proper review. I hope that some Archive reader will provide one.

The book was originally published in 1958 by the Oslo University Press in Norway, with an American edition in 1959 by Macmillan. The book should be readily available in any large library in either North America or Europe.

I have a copy of this book. I had to acquire it through a dealer in scarce books. It is difficult to summarize a work of this nature. This is a report of an attempt to scientificly study the subject. The printing refered to is a translation from Norwegan,a notoriously evasive language. If you find a copy for sale at less than US$40.00 it is a good price indeed. My copy cost me US$28.00 fifteen or twenty years ago.
