e-mail & identity...

While I expect that any email address submitted is not wantonly handed out for spam and the like, just how much is it used and by whom?
The subjects here do interest me, but my desire for privacy is, well, to be blunt, bordering (some might say crossed that border) on paranoia. As you can well understand, some kinds of attention are not desirable. That "That person writes sick fantasies about ballbusting..." is not something one would like friends and neighbors to be told. And some less than room temperature IQ folks might get odd ideas about "has to be done" about things like that. Paranoia, perhaps, but I'd only have to be wrong once...
If I did register, could anyone else registered see my address?
Could anyone send e-mail through the board without seeing my address? (I know ikonboard, for example, has this ability.)
Can I turn that off?
Is there an alternate 'private message' function on the board?
Does any action of the board generate e-mail?
If so, is that option defeatable, or better, off by default?
Basicly, can I set things (or are they set by default) so that ONLY an admin can e-mail me?
Ideally, with things working properly, I'd hope to never be e-mailed at all, save perhaps at sign-on.

The email that you use to register here for VBulletin at EA is kept private. Shannon over at BME does not look at it. We do not share it. We do not sell the lists.
It WILL show up to the board, by default, unless you go to your USER CP/prefs and tell it not to.
If you do not do this, then the whole board can see it and use it. Whether you show it or not, it will be available as a link to "send email to (your name)". You have to shut this off as well. Just don't go setting it to NOT receive email from Admin's. This really pisses them off.
(Trust me, I can tell ya!)
In conclusion, you're safe to have an email with us for the purpose of logging in. It just has to be valid, and we'll keep it safe and sound for you.

Paolo is correct

You are safe.
Given your concerns however, it's probably MUCH better for you to get an email address from one of the numerous free email box services to use for your alternate-online-persona. These are typically web based email services which you can use to recieve mail that you don't necessarily want clogging up your main mailbox, and since it's all stored on their server, there's a lot less chance of someone accidently running across it on your PC.

Make sure your email cleint is setup as a IMAP not a POP3. POP3 moves your email from the server to your computer, but the IMAP leaves the mail on the server and only displays the email.

Mainly it's a matter of traceability and such. The only other person with access to my computer(s) respects my privacy - and is aware of my fantasies... and that they must remain fantasies, not things to be made into realities. All the same, I do want to want to maximize isolation. Private messaging is fine, but e-mail I want at a bare minimum. It sounds like it might be ok for me, though I would have to tweak settings to get what I want. I will ponder this some more. Don't hold your breath, I ponder very slowly.

Paranoia is fun as a mental masturbation especially if you are missing the usual organ used for that purpose, but overall, paranoia is also an ego trip. Unless you really are in some sensitive area where someone would try to do you some nastiness, if you are just a regular person, who would be trying to invade your thoughts? But you do have a right to privacy. In fact there has been a story in the NY Times that some web sites invade high speed computers and set them ujp to host the web site without the actual owner knowing about it. So maybe your paranoia is justified. I had one web site actually go into my address list to send out spam under the name of one of my freinds to avoid spam filters. Amazing isn't it? I found two DOS programs that were in my computer that came in on jpg's downloaded from a site.
Okay I just verified your whole paranoia, so maybe you aren't paranoid, just realistic.

Think about it, folks. How much data is flying around out there right now, and do you really think that the government is making ANY attempt at all to look at all of it?
No.
The sheer cost of equipment and manpower to track even AOL users would be staggering and simply not feasible.
The only sites that they watch are newsgroups and hardcore underage porn sites that get reported to them. And then again, they have to collect quite a bit to get it to hold up in court.
There's simply TOO MUCH data flying around the subether for them to keep up with. Hell, there's too much of it flying around in ONE ISP for them to keep up with. They don't CARE where you've been, unless you've hit a site that's been flagged for such. That and if you're dumb enough to give them real information and a credit card number.
This might be a weird site and have some "out there" fiction posted to it, but I've read worse at ancgs and assgm .com respectively. Compared to some of THAT, our files are pretty tame and rated PG13 in contrast!
I can speak for the Staff here when I say we appreciate your paranoia...not everyone shares our high opinion of us as we do.

And not everyone appreciates a good eunuch, either.
We are not out to get you. Trust me.
I'm your friend.

[p]It's not you, nor "the government" that concerns me. It's what can happen if one nutcase decides to make my life hell. Sometime when I have time (time, how it does fly!) I likely will register. I expect to be busy in one way or another for a while yet..
