Suggested by Mike. Stent’s article is now available as an eBook download from the University of Oregon. It has been very difficult to come by, though it is frequently cited in the literature.

Chinese Eunuchs

G. Carter Stent

Pub. Date: 1877

File Size: 145K

Primarily a historical account of the considerable role that eunuchs played in Chinese history, but there is some cross-cultural perspective. This account contains Chinese characters; to read it properly, you will need to have a unicode font on your reading device. From: Journal of the North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (1877), Article V., pp. 143-184.

Hmmm.... Try starting from the front page at http://e-asia.uoregon.com. I started there to see what else they had - a feast of books and articles that I’m interested in for other reasons. I had no trouble downloading the article from there.

As an e-book, you have to download Microshaft's free e-book reader.

(Ah, they claim it is free, but all the little invisible threads that drag along the strong ropes and then heavy chains will be there.)
