The way I heard it, this was said by Bill Bradley, the Editor of the Washington Post. He had been dating some well known female journalist for a zillion years and she was beginning to put pressure on him. He was said to have remarked to someone, "Yeah...I'll get married when they elect a Polish Pope." According to the story, true to his promise, when the current Pope was elected--he married her, and has been married to her ever since.
