I looked it up, it was only just over 2 months ago that David posted chapter 27 - God, it seems that it was years.
But, as always he does not disappoint. For new members, David's stories are simply wonderful.

Colin,
thanks for the compliments. and i apologize for taking so long to post -- the truth is that after i finished exams for last term, i just got downright lazy. during the whole of the break i'd write maybe a couple of paragraphs at a time and then go off.
i promise not to let that much time elapse before i post again. in fact, i am about 1/3 of the way through the next chapter and want to get it oer with as soon as i can.
and, i will also get the conclusion of "the prince" series finished up a soon as possible.
again, thanks for the compliments -- i can't tell you enough how happy it makes me to know that people are enjoying reading it as much as i enjoy writing it.

David,
You now have me drooling in anticipation. But, please, do not appologise for the time it takes for each episode. Good stories, like vintage wine, need time to develop.

Re: The Tribes, Chapter 28
I just love this story, as I have said before it really is excellent.
I noticed it at 2am in the morning, I was tired and about to go to bed - which I did - for a while.
I just could not get to sleep wondering what was happening to Jack and his friends.
In the end I just had to get up and read it.
It was after 3 when I finally got back to bed.
Jamie.

As a "walk-on" character in the tribes, I anxiously await each installment and dive into them with great gusto! I can't wait to see what "I'm" going to do next!
This is a truly remarkable tale, for those of you who have not read it, that is. You SHOULD. Right now. All 28 parts. Don't stop until you're done.
In my top 10 favorites of the Archive, this one has got to fighting tooth and nail for #1!

I certainly enjoyed chapter 28 of "The Tribes" and I'm anxiously waiting for the next episode of "The Prince".

Re: The Tribes, Chapter 28
When I read the FIRST episode of Tribes, I knew that David was a master storyteller. And, it only gets better with each episode! Chapter 28 has furnished a segment that just reached off the screen and grabbed me by the throat:
Sasha leaned back in his chair and thought back to the pre-Virus days and the societys attitude towards homosexuality. Most people pretended that they accepted gays and supported gay rights but Sasha knew that that wasnt entirely true. Laws making gay bashing a hate crime were never universally passed. There were hate-mongers some were even ministers, or at least pretended that they were who preached that all gays would burn in Hell for Eternity. And then, the Virus had come and suddenly who loved whom didnt seem to matter as much anymore. Sasha realized that a lot of the old prejudices seemed to have died along with most of humanity.
Thinking back to the relocation camps and even in the earliest of the post-Virus days, Sasha couldnt remember a single incident of racial prejudice either. He figured that in the Bad Times right after everything fell apart there werent many people who wanted to be alone. He remembered his own feelings even though he had always preferred solitude and his own company there were times that Sasha was desperate to have the actual physical company of another person. It never seemed to matter what their skin color, religion, gender, sexual preference, or anything else was. The only important thing was that there was another living, breathing person in your company for a little while. That had been during the very first days right between The End and the Bad Times.
Davids story of the death of the old civilization and the (painful) rebirth of the new has captured the struggle that has occupied much of my conscious life. I was battling prejudice when I was in elementary school before I really understood its power and pervasiveness. When I was active in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, I, far too optimistically, thought that all prejudice would end within my own lifetime. Now I just hope that it diminishes significantly in my grandsons lifetime. I hope that it doesnt require the apocalypse of plague and population crash that David creates, but I can see a far better and healthier society rising out of the ashes despite the archetypic battle between good and evil that were seeing between The Brotherhood and the tribes gradually being civilized by the Shiprats.
I do have a couple of requests toward future episodes. As a straight, old geezer, I would like to see some acknowlegement of straight sex. The gay sex between the main characters is just fine in the detail thats given. There just ought to be a little more notice of some of the straight pairings going on in the background. There may even be some "grouping," rather than "pairing," in creative ways. Its an entirely new world, after all.
That leads to the need to acknowledge that humanity is beginning its renaissance. Weve yet to see some notice of the birth of the next generation. Somewhere we need to see a baby. It would acknowledge that society is really beginning anew. Again, it need only be a quick background note.
The Brotherhood is clearly a dead end. They can reproduce ONLY by recruiting from outside. The "civilized" tribes can reproduce through sex in loving relationships, though such would only be very peripheral to the main story line. Just noted in the background as part of the renaissance.
We can see the beginning of this reproduction in Paolos relationship with Jordie. Raising a child does not require a biological relationship, but somewhere, still, the child needs to be produced.
Again, David has captured our own Paolo perfectly. In an ideal world hed have at least a half-dozen kids of his own, whether biological or adopted. I keep threatening Paolo that Im going to move to Indiana to serve as a matchmaker.
Id be hard pressed to select my single favorite story on the Archive, but The Tribes is certainly very near the top of any list. I can hardly wait for the next episode.
