Get thee unto http://www.download.com and look for free downloads of spyware tools. Search up Zone Alarm Pro and get the free version. Everyone should have a good Firewall going. I think you need it.

I real virtually all posts on the boards here and have had no pop ups ... I know of no mechanism that would allow someone to target you specifically with popups and they are certainly not through the Archive officially - we don't do advertising.
There are so many sites now a days that prompt you to install "weather" software or "time synchronization" software that are actually pop up ad generators ... even though they do the function they are advertised to do the real reason is to generate spam on your computer ... it's easy to have accidently clicked yes intsead of no and it's on before you even know it.
Here's a little freeware program called 'Startup Control Panel' that will show you EVERYTHING that starts automatically when your computer boots and gives you the opportunity to stop it from loading if it's not necessary.
