Hi There. Paolo: for some reason, after I upgraded AOL to 7.0, I can no longer get into chat. All I get is the Apric screen with no blank fields. Any thoughts? Not the end of the world; I hope to be on Mac and a non-aol browser after Christmas.

Apirc uses Java, and it's touchy.

Try using it with all AOL windows minimized and using Internet Explorer or Netscape. All computers running Windows will have IE on them. If that won't work, then AOL's software has done something to the way that your PC uses Java and you'll have to try using either Bersirc (which you can download from the EA chat page here: http://www.eunuch.org/Setup.exe ) or the other options on the chat page. AOL is a very invasive and prioritized software, and all joking aside, one should avoid it if at all possible. The Bersirc program will run on all versions of Windows, even NT and 2000, and comes fully automated for Archive chat.

Apric Chat worked ok for me until today with AOL 7.0 and Windows-XP. However, I now get the message, "Can't Find Web Site". I also get this message on Eric.

If I try to link directly from IE 6.0, I get the message, "Page Can Not be Displayed".

What do you suggest?

Chances are if it cant' find the website, there are only a very explanations for this.

1. Talula's cable / power went out*

2. Talula's cat unplugged it

3. Talula's roomie tripped over it

4. Talula hurled on it

In cases of a webiste not coming up, try another one. For example, if the chat won't come up but MSN or something else will, then it's not YOUR computer doing it; it's the server or the Provider that the site in question needs to use. However, if NOTHING will come up at all (a common problem with eunuchs) then it's your machine needing rebooted OR YOUR Provider. Once you stop and think about it, there's a lot of things out there that can make a site not come up.

All of my other links work. I even rebooted my computer and still have the problen with the chat "Apric" and "eric" links. Any other suggestions?

Apirc and Eirc both reside on a different server than the Archive itself.

It's likely that either 1) the server itself was down or 2) there were other technical network problems (as there have been all day today) preventing you from reaching the chat server.

In other words it's not impossible for everything BUT the chat rooms to be up and running and have it be unrelated to the operating system or your internet connection.

The easiest and most reliable way to connect to the chat room is still the bersirc client which can be downloaded here (

The way I see this, you have two options here.

Remove AOL and Re-install Windows XP to correct the Java corruption/error that you obviously have. I prefer to blame this on AOL 7.0. In 99% of the errors reported about this site, 99% of them are from AOL users, with the glorious exception of Andrew, bless him. Get a real ISP instead of AOL.

Actually, it may be that the only reason I am the only AOL user without this problem is that I still use AOL 5.0 and have never bothered to upgrade and probably won't in the near future. Why bother? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."



And AOL 8.0 has just come out.

I downloaded and installed "Bersirc Chat", but "Apric" decided to connect again. You never know what computers are going to do.

Must have been the connection between the "Apric" server and the chat server.
