The latest update as of a few minutes ago....
If you haven't taken the survey yet please do so ....
Hi everyone,
This year's annual survey has now been open for 15 days, and there's 16 days to go. Most important thing first:
If you haven't taken part in the 2024 Gender Census survey yet, click here!
https://sendy.gendercensus.com/l/vUP8Gs ... n40okggEDA
This survey is open to anyone, in any country, of any age, whose experience of their gender doesn't fit tidily into the strict binary of female/male. It seeks broad statistical data about the language we use to refer to ourselves in English, e.g. pronouns, identity words, titles. The results will be made public for use in activism, self-advocacy, business and academia. It closes on 13th June.
Now that's been said, on to the...
Progress report
Here's a link to this year's public participation spreadsheet. My favourite part is the participation graph:
https://sendy.gendercensus.com/l/vUP8Gs ... n40okggEDA
We're way ahead of the past two years - we beat last year's final count over two weeks early! We're even ahead of the record-breaking year of 44,000 participants in 2021. It's hard to judge so far in advance, but I'll guess that there might be 50,000 participants in the end?
And some additional tidbits:
In the busiest hour, there were over 1,300 submissions. That's one every 3 seconds or so. (It's now settled down to 500-1,000 per day.)
The country with the most entries is the USA, 56% - but going by percentage of the country's population, the top country is New Zealand.
Participants aged 31 and older only make up 20% of responses, which doesn't sound like much, but it's actually higher than previous years.
Tumblr is in the lead for ways people are finding the survey, at 44%.
The most popular time to take the survey is 4pm UK time, and most people (26%) are taking 5 or 6 minutes over it.
Zine for sale
Based on over a decade of collecting tens of thousands of survey entries, I have written a zine about pronouns:
It's aiming to be a beginner-to-advanced guide for allies, with an informative and nerdy tone. It explains:
Third-person, personal, singular pronouns (with established examples)
Why learning new pronouns is harder than learning new names
Why singular they always has plural verbs (always "you are" and not "you is", even when talking about one person)
How to use they/them for nonbinary people (including themselves vs. themself)
How to mess up gracefully (with a focus on making it more comfortable for the trans person)
What neopronouns are
This zine is 36 sides of A5, with 120 gsm 100% recycled paper pages and 100% recycled card cover, handstitch-bound.
It's £4 GBP plus P&P from the UK. Buy a copy: UK second class / first class, and outside of the UK
