Parents and doctors are mystified by teenager's actions in castrating himself
A 15-year-old boy has castrated himself with a knife in Central China's Hunan Province, the Xiaoxiang Morning Post reported.
Although his life was saved, thanks to immediate medical intervention at a nearby hospital, he has lost his reproductive capacity forever.
On September 26, the boy's father Yao Aihua (alias), living in a village in Changde city, was about to go to bed at about 11:00pm when he suddenly heard a shriek from his son.
Thinking that the boy was having a nightmare, he did not pay any attention at first but rushed to see his son after a second yell.
He found his son's room locked. The boy called Yao Yong (alias) opened the door himself.
His father was shocked at the sight. With a pale face, Yao Yong was covering his nether regions with his hands, although it was obvious he was bleeding badly. A pool of blood was gathering on the floor.
His father and three other relatives took the boy to the village hospital.
The doctors were shocked to find that Yao Yong's scrotum had been cut off. They rushed him to the County People's Hospital for emergency treatment.
At 12:00pm Yao Yong was in a critical condition from excessive bleeding. The doctors asked Yao's father to look for the lost parts that the boy had thrown from the window, in order to attempt a re-attachment operation. However, his father's efforts were in vain.
At 1:00am the next day, doctors had to sew up his wound and the boy's life was saved.
A doctor in the hospital said he would not regain sexual or reproductive capacity and his voice would turn as high as a girl's. He would not grow a beard.
Yao refused to explain why he had mutilated his genitals.
His father said Yao Yong was very introverted and hard working but had failed to gain admission to high school.
He never behaved like a girl. He never read novels or watched TV. He spent all his spare time studying.
His mother had committed suicide when he was three. His father had to support two aged grandparents, his mentally retarded brother and sister-in-law as well as three children. The boy was very obedient but poverty had rendered him almost mute, according to the father.
