Parents and doctors are mystified by teenager's actions in castrating himself

A 15-year-old boy has castrated himself with a knife in Central China's Hunan Province, the Xiaoxiang Morning Post reported.

Although his life was saved, thanks to immediate medical intervention at a nearby hospital, he has lost his reproductive capacity forever.

On September 26, the boy's father Yao Aihua (alias), living in a village in Changde city, was about to go to bed at about 11:00pm when he suddenly heard a shriek from his son.

Thinking that the boy was having a nightmare, he did not pay any attention at first but rushed to see his son after a second yell.

He found his son's room locked. The boy called Yao Yong (alias) opened the door himself.

His father was shocked at the sight. With a pale face, Yao Yong was covering his nether regions with his hands, although it was obvious he was bleeding badly. A pool of blood was gathering on the floor.

His father and three other relatives took the boy to the village hospital.

The doctors were shocked to find that Yao Yong's scrotum had been cut off. They rushed him to the County People's Hospital for emergency treatment.

At 12:00pm Yao Yong was in a critical condition from excessive bleeding. The doctors asked Yao's father to look for the lost parts that the boy had thrown from the window, in order to attempt a re-attachment operation. However, his father's efforts were in vain.

At 1:00am the next day, doctors had to sew up his wound and the boy's life was saved.

A doctor in the hospital said he would not regain sexual or reproductive capacity and his voice would turn as high as a girl's. He would not grow a beard.

Yao refused to explain why he had mutilated his genitals.

His father said Yao Yong was very introverted and hard working but had failed to gain admission to high school.

He never behaved like a girl. He never read novels or watched TV. He spent all his spare time studying.

His mother had committed suicide when he was three. His father had to support two aged grandparents, his mentally retarded brother and sister-in-law as well as three children. The boy was very obedient but poverty had rendered him almost mute, according to the father.

Shouldn't that be "voice would remain as high as a girl's"?

Any guesses as to why he castrated himself? My thinking is perhaps he wants to purge his mind of sexual thoughts so that he may concentrate on studying better.

The male voice does not get higher after castration.

If the boy's voice had not changed YET, then it won't. If it had already changed fully, then it's going to stay right where it's at.

Some years ago, and I've since lost the article, I read a case study by Havelock Ellis who, in his own words, "had the opportunity to castrate a thirteen year old boy - at his own request." It seemed that the boy (keep in mind this was quite some YEARS ago) was terrified of what puberty was going to do to him and begged his parents to take him to a doctor to do something about it.

Ellis reports that the boy's voice was just beginning to change, and that after castration, resettled into its normal childhood tone. He also reports that the boy's many "psychological problems" also cleared up some weeks after his castration. Obviously, the boy's voice had not changed very much, and with his supply of testosterone gone, it gave up. Also, at this phase, any other changes that might have begun would also cease and possibly revert.

In the case of a fully changed voice, however, this is a common misconception of castration. It won't change back to a childhood soprano if it's fully changed by the time of the castration.

I have done a few web searches for Ellis and his works, but I've never been able to find this article reproduced online.

I wonder if the boy in Havelock Ellis's case study is still alive. It would be cool if he became a member of his board to tell us about his experience!

Hmm... according to a web search, Havelock Ellis lived from 1859 to 1939. He recorded the results of his studies in a multi-volume work, "Studies in the Psychology of Sex", which he published and periodically revised in the years between 1896 and 1928.

Does anyone have that book? Maybe the case study that Paolo mentioned is in there.

I'll look it up next time I hit the library. A few of us (including Jesus) are able to look up stuff from the scientific literature. I have oodles of case reports in my collection.

Interesting case... about 5 years ago I met a guy on the net who was castrated at the age of 12. He told that his body didn't tolerate testosterone, and he got very sick when his balls started to produce testosterone. As his health worsened quickly doctors had not much time to investigate the problem. To save the boys life they had to castrate him. As I understood the case remained mystery for docs and that boy never gone through puberty. I was little bit suspicious about his case, because of lot of fake castratos around. But we made few conversations over phone, and his voice was really highpitched. There still remains possibilty that he somehow faked his voice, but that seems remote to me. Btw., he is the one who started the irc channel ##!eunuchs, he had nick nonuts, which many have nowadays and his isp was jetlink if I can remember. I had his email, but that doesn't work anymore. I've lost contact to him. He was actually very shy and pollite guy. I would like to get in contact with him, if he was somewhere around here. He should be 33yo now

What is nonuts' old e-mail address? Perhaps a web search on that address would provide a clue.
