Recovery Time for Scrotum Removal AFTER Prior Orchiectomy?

I had my orchiectomy in August of 2015. Despite assurances, the scrotal skin did not shrink, and became both a physical nuisance and a source of dysphoria. I finally received a surgical consult, but the surgeon's waitlist was a year out. Just today, I finally received a surgery date of September 8th!

I cannot have full nullification yet, due to BMI, but this will be a big step forward in terms of how I feel about my body.

My question is about recovery time. I have to fly to a conference on September 20th, and I will be presenting there on September 22nd and 23rd. I am hoping that my healing will be sufficient to make the flight, etc.

I know my situation (scrotectomy 8 years after orchiectomy) is unusual, but is there anyone else here who had post-orchiectomy scrotal removal, who can chime in on how long their recovery period was?

Thanks in advance!

I'd say it depends on how long you intend to be standing during this conference where you're presenting. If they were scheduling for Sep 8, I would have asked if they had an appointment during the time right after you were getting back from the conference. Often places are scheduling at certain date and are working that to fill their schedule. Asking for a date sooner would likely have been a big no, but sometime later may have been possible.

I did this for my nullification surgery. I could have had it two months earlier than I did, in April but it was more convenient for me to get it done towards the end of June, when it was going to be damn near impossible for me to get in and out of my house due to a major PGA golf event being held nearly across the street, that year. It was just a good time for me to be away, so I didn't have to hassle with it.

I got an "oh yes, we can do that... No problem" from my surgeon. Of course, each office/practice works at their own initiative, so your surgeon might have a different view of scheduling than mine did.

I will be giving one presentation each day, standing for 20 minutes each time. If I need to sit down instead while presenting, I'm sure they will accomodate that.

Good point about possibly delaying the surgery. Of course, then I run into similar issues with a late October trip to Hawaii with the hubby....

I had my scrotum removed 4 years post castration and the healing was actually worse than for the castration. I went back to work 5 days post op, and was promptly hospitalised with a hematoma the next day. I personally would allow two weeks post op before doing anything strenuous, which includes flying, commuting on a train, driving or moving around an office. The problem is that the skin between the legs is always moving, so is quite slow to heal. 12 days is perhaps doable, but perhaps get airport assistance so you don’t have to walk for miles around the terminal - that to me would be the main concern.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I fortunately work from home, which will help, and I have plenty of sick leave if I need to use it.

I was thinking the same thing about getting airport assistance. In fact, lifting luggage will likely be an issue that I'll have to get assistance with as well.

I had my empty scrotum removed approx 18 months post castration, it was rather long at about 4”.

For me the healing time required was 4 weeks, by then I felt confident enough to exercise and swim normally.

Ideally the surgeon will leave sufficient flexibility down there for you to be able to flex the area when fully healed.

Be careful not to tear the stitches early on as this will leave more obvious scarring. Because I stressed that I am very sporty the surgeon left a slight ridge of skin to allow it to have plenty of room to stretch. The scarring is barely visible now and can easily be covered by makeup if I want it to be invisible.

I am also very sporty and have had some concerns about having the scrotum removed because of this. Thank you Justine, that is valuable advice for anyone who is having a scrotectomy.

Thank you, Justine. I don’t have the challenge of being sporty, but I appreciate the details on scar length and healing time!

Who those who had their scrotum removed after their Orchiectomy, how much out of pocket did you pay? I found a doctor who will do it as cosmetic surgery which means I do t need a “letter”. The problem is than I can’t run any thing Thru my insurance.
