Well, That Sucks...

Inspired by the Reddit sub of the same name, I thought (since I was bored tonight) that we'd try something similar here.

What has happened lately, usually something unexpected and seriously inconvenient, that has happened to you?

For example:

I came home Sunday evening from visiting family and friends, and looked at the bladder tank in the utility room. For those that don't know, this is where the pressure for your water comes from if you have a well. It's like a mini water tower. It was seeping. I knew it was getting rusty, but it had been put off. There was no more putting it off!

The plumbers came the next day, and $800 later, had put in a new one with a lot of new pipe and a faucet next to it. It wasn't an exact fit, as the old one was OLD. They were amazed.

That, and the old tank crumbled when they took it out. It was literally a ticking time-water bomb waiting to go off.

At least you did'nt come home to a flooded house. If that had happened, think of the cost.

A bladder tank is new to me. The first two houses I lived in in the US were both on wells. There was a pump on each one; I wonder if this not only drew in water, but also pressurized in the house? I know there was not any kind of auxiliary tank that I can recall.

Not in the same league as Paolo for sure, but I had a difficult Sunday... I have limited ability to handle much depth of global warming (aka snow) in my powerchair. In the fall we had contracted w/ a guy to plow our drive and shovel the W/C ramp into the house. We had an event that we were going to on Sunday and while there was a storm forecast, the National Weather Service website said 'No significant accumulation" and ending early in the day, so figured no problems...

Sunday morning I found that the forecast was wrong, that we had enough accumulation to be pushing my limits - I called the plow guy and left a voice mail that we had enough snow to need plowing, and that while we would be going out for the day, we would get him payment promptly as soon as he told us how much.

Got the car loaded and went out with some difficulty but not to bad.

One of the challenges is that the friend we were visiting has an apartment that isn't really big enough to get around in easily with my power chair. My solution is to carry my manual chair which I do by flipping it upside down on my lap to get it in and out of the van, and swap into it at her place. It's a bit of a pain but at least it gives me an option for places that don't work with the power chair.

Came home and found we hadn't been plowed. Worse it had been snowing lightly all day and we had another inch on top of the already marginal amount. Tried the ramp w/ the manual chair in my lap going forwards - nope just spins... For some reason my power chair seems to do better on slick surfaces if I do them in reverse - I got part way up the ramp and started spinning. When this happens normally I can grab the rail and pull my chair along enough to get unstuck, but w/ the chair in my lap I don't have a hand free to do this, as I have to hang onto the chair...

The GF, who is legally blind and using a walker was coming up the ramp behind me and she had to push me up the ramp a foot or so at a time... We finally got into the house, after a LOT of trouble. I also knocked one of the clothing guards on the manual chair off - it's now on the ground under the ramp where I can't get to it until the snow melts

Of course Sunday is 'trash night' in our neighborhood when we need to get our trash and recycling out to the street for pickup Monday morning... We also had a cooler full of leftovers sitting in the car that I would normally have gotten on a second trip.

I wasn't going back out under these conditions...

I then spent quite a while trying to reach the plow guy - multiple voice mails, emails etc... Finally reached him and he said that he hadn't come out because we weren't going to be home in order to pay him on the spot - it would be to much trouble for us to snail him a check or do other payment.... And now he was going to have to go to work early in the morning so he wasn't going to come out - Sorry about that!

So then I tried calling some neighbors that help us out with various things - one set was out of town, couldn't reach the other one....

So had to skip doing trash, and leave the cooler in the car - fortunately the freezing temps didn't seem to hurt any of the food. I was able to get it in on Monday....

Hopefully we won't get any more storms because I really don't want to deal with this plow guy again - we are kind of stuck with him for the rest of the winter, but we will NOT be using him next winter, or giving him any recommendations...

Sorry to hear about that, Wheelie.

There's things I can't do anymore, like seriously heavy lifting, and I certainly miss the boys next door who have graduated and "flown the nest".

Years ago I was talking with the maintenance guy at a motel where we were staying on a project in beautiful Salome, AZ. He told about once there was a loud noise and a guy comes running out of his room with his pants around his ankles. The story goes that the motel was built in 40s / 50s. Stuff was getting old. The popoff valve on the water heater froze shut and the heater control mechanism quit. Heat built up and up along with pressure in the entire water system just waiting. Then some poor guy flushed the toilet.

My mother has a well, just a simple tank, which we pump air into to make a pressure cushion. I think newer wells have an actual air bladder in them. Her well gets what we call, "waterlogged" once in a while, meaning all the air has leaked out and we have to drag the air hose over to the well house to put more air in the tank. We just got done putting new pipe into the well at $4500. Of course, I'm sure her well at 550 feet is deeper than yours.

I am not much better. Since I lost my left leg, I have had to learn to use the prosthetic, and walker. (I use the wheelchair in the house. ) it sucks but I can still drive

FWIW, I know a fair number of leg amps, some above the knee, and some below. I don't know how long it took them to do the learning to use the prosthetic, but they all seem to be able to walk w/o many issues, so hopefully you will become less limited as you learn more about using your prosthetic... I drive but I have to use hand controls. My van has a nice drive from the chair setup where I can roll in w/ my power char and lock it down and go... If I have to drive anything else I have a set of really sketchy 'universal' controls that work, but are a real pain to install or remove, and are kind of nervous-making to use... Not to mention the pain of having to use my manual chair and go through all the drills involved in getting both me and the chair in and out....
