5th Grade Memory

Post by Atreyu69 (imported) »

I remember one day from 5th Grade quit clearly. It was raining and so we couldn't go outside for lunch. We stayed in the classroom and I played a game of chess with a boy named Eric. I beat him easily. The teacher, Mrs. T, was beside herself with amazement.

She said, "Atreyu(not my real name) you played chess with Eric and you won! Why that's fantastic. You should be so proud."

"OK," I said.

"No really I mean it," Mrs. T continued. "Just knowing how to move the prices is a huge accomplishment in itself. But to beat Eric well, that's really an accomplishment. It's really congratulatory. You must feel awfully good about yourself!"

You see the thing is Mrs. T had been told that I was dyslexic. She thought that dyslexic was just a nicer way of saying "brain damaged." What a stupid bitch!

One of my laptops is dyslexic: when I type, the cursor might jump unexpectedly and type gibberish.

This is very true for many computers that I have owned.

I learned to type in the 7th grade on a manual typewriter. The typewriter keys were all blank except the F and the J key had a raised line on the bottom of them as a home row finder - this was how you learned to place your hands in the right position to start and then to move your fingers the appropriate length to find the correct key.

I still do not look at my keyboard when I type. I was proud that I could type 80 to 90 words a minute once I got an electric typewriter. Now, teenagers can type 500 words a minute with their thumbs on their smartphones and I have to look at the keyboard.

Some insuring mysteries in life are:

-- Why did we learn to type using only nine of our ten fingers? There must be a use for the left thumb.

-- Will the debate over putting one or two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence ever be settled?

-- Ten keypads on a computer keyboard have the 123 on the bottom row. Phones have the 123 on the top row. ATM machines randomly put the 123 on either the top or bottom row. Why?

-- To take over the world, will computers actually have to be smarter than humans or will humans just have to invent computers tha

I'm voting for the later.

The laptop keyboard was guilty of my case: when I connect the external keyboard through USB - everything works normally. The cursor does not jump and the text is typed without distortions.

Chess competitions were sometimes held in the children's summer camp. I also participated in them, but did not achieve much success. Then I realized that chess competitions require preliminary preparation: knowledge of openings, options for continuing the game, and so on and so forth. Then it turned out that the winners are those guys who had previously studied in chess clubs ...

My 5th grade memory is Mrs. B (I think she went to school with God) told us that the metric system was stupid and would never catch on. She skipped over it. That was 197x, and I never had it taught again.

In a way, she was right. The metric system is not directly tied to the human body. The English system has feet, yards, and so on - very visual and logical ...

It is not keyboard that is to blame usually, but the touchpad. It is not sunk into plastic in modern laptops, and when you put your hands on it - it moves cursor. I think there are some programs, that are able to disable it while you type (basically - after you type first letter, it will be disabled for some time, if you type more, the timer is reset).

To have spare finger! (but then, I press left ctrl by my palm, not by a finger)

One, you are not on typewriter, leave typesetting to computer :) Some phone keyboards actually translate two spaces into period and space automatically.

To cause extra pain. After all - banks do not cause enough on their own.

Computers will stay mostly the same, humans will be dumber on average :p

There was no Alt key when I learned to type. Now, the Alt+Tab command is handy and I do use my left thumb for that command.

Yes. It has taught me to once again type with my palms up and not resting down. Typing on an old manual typewriter required more force and keeping your palms up gave you both the force needed to strike hard enough and a sore left pinky finger. Who put the "a" key on the least strong finger?
