After 5 years, prostate cancer attacked again

I'm back! My PSA was below what some women score, which was OK by me. After five years, during which my strength returned to precancer levels, I noticed with alarm that all the adipose tissue had disappeared from below my navel. Suspecting that my assailant had returned, I called my GP. He acted with dispatch and arranged for a PSA, and an appointment with my urologist. The latter ordered a bone scan as well, just in case. Results: cancer in the right floating rib as well as the ischium. Time is on my side, in that prostate cancer moves slowly in 75 year olds. My urologist prescribed bicalutamide as well as a stronger dose of Lupron, every four months. I have had my first shot of Lupron, and taken 21 tablets of bicalutamide for 21 days. I still go out to the range every other day, and can still draw a 50# longbow. There are no tournaments for the next few months, but when they return, I'll be ready.

Wow, so sorry to hear that your cancer has returned. Let s hope that you are right about slow growth of cancer at 75. You gave up a lot being castrated to stop your cancer 5 years ago. Looking back, what advice do you have for men facing prostate cancer for the first time ? How did being castrated change your life back then ? How did you keep up your strength with no T ? How has your life and especially your sex life been as a eunuch for 5 years ? You have a lot of first hand experience to pass on to other men. And you sound like you have remained very masculine as a eunuch.

Thank you CBtoOx! I have lost strength, and can no longer draw a 50# longbow. Fortunately, a loss in muscle mass does not affect the brain. Prostate cancer is a worthy adversary and anything one can do to outwit it should be tried. I now shoot a detuned warbow, drawing 45#

Speaking of sex, erections are highly overrated. I haven't had one in six years, and until the dose of Lupron was eight times stronger, had a satisfying sex life.

Much earlier this month I had a whole body bone scan. My GP phoned with the results : far from retreating, the cancer is in the ischium, as well as the fifth and sixth ribs. That explains the lumbar pain. It only takes one awshit to cancel six attaboys. I'm in it for the long haul, and the Lupron dose is eight times stronger, so I expect to see some results . . . stay tuned.

Hey,

This is a heartbreaking shock. Yet, the way you are going to deal with it gives so much hope that I have confidence you will not allow it to defeat you. Those are not just wishes, that is based on the fact that with a committed patient doing what the doctors tell him to do, the results can be very good.

Thank you for sharing your ESH with the community. It is quite possible that your willingness to keep all of us up to date will, someday, save another person's life. Your post is a perfect example of paying it forward.

The care I'm getting is called palliative care for a reason. There's no talk of a cure, but if it buys me ten years I'll be grateful. I'm still flinging arrows, every other day, although the length of time I can hold a 50# longbow has been reduced.

The medical oncologist told me I'll be on Lupron for life. It appears I'll remain a eunuch as long as I live. I have a very patient wife, lover and girlfriend all in the same package. Sex life? . . . All I have are the memories. There's far worse fates. Foh uck!

Hey,

Sorry to hear about the Dx. Has your oncologist suggested a bilateral subcapsular orchidectomy instead of Lupin? It is easier on the liver.

Thanks for your answers. Lots of men when facing cancer can t imagine life after castration. It sounds like it took a lot to get your powerful balls to stop working ? How was that adjustment after the Lupron got high enough to shut down your extra strong gonads ? You sound like you made that adjustment really well. And you sound like your priorities handle those changes really well. A strong and caring wife at your side sounds like a huge blessing for you. Your memories of your past sex life giving you a lot of satisfaction now. Do you have the desire to enjoy sex now on Lupron ?

Thanks for sharing your experiences to help other men who follow you in similar cancer treatment. Your honest experiences will help them know both what to expect, and also how to continue enjoying life during treatment.

My bowyer was at the club shoot yesterday, and insisted I shoot a 29# recurve bow. It took some getting used to, but I managed some good shots. The bow has interchangeable limbs, so I can increase the draw to 45#, while he finishes my 45# longbow. It's important to stay active, because moping around does nobody any good.
