I'm just curious to see how many members here are fans of animation? As the title says, or even Anime, or classic cartoons.

What are your favorites?

I simply adore South Park, like Avatar The Last Airbender, and Ricky & Morty. I've tried Naruto and Hunter X Hunter, but just couldn't get into those. Also, Boku No Hero Academia, but gave up after season 2.

Thanks.

Actually kind of interesting to think about this thread. I don't remember thinking in the 60s or 70s that cartoon format programming could amount to anything. Thinking back, The Simpsons in the 80s was the first time I remember that format calling attention. The Simpsons is really kind of amazing. I grew up being fed the John Wayne model as the American ideal. My Australian buddy assures me that America's greatest cultural contribution was not John Wayne but the Simpsons. He loves them. Their reach is worldwide. Maybe ten years ago we happened to be in Lima, Peru when a Simpson's movie opened with a big bang and when we returned to our Arizona home the movie was opening the next week.

Definately Yes to South Park and Venture Brothers. Family Guy not so much and I find Japanese Anime sorta creepy (except for Shin Chan).

But by far my favorite animation is Archer!!

I'm a HUGE fan of Adult Swim and related late-night, mature cartoons.

I don't consider Family guy, Futurama, or Archer to be true 'late night' cartoons, although they all have their good points, especially the 2nd and 3rd. For me, the Adult Swim stuff is best when it's done on the cheap or with only a core pair of creators.

South Park qualifies, even though it's very mainstream, it's subversive as hell, and it speaks truths that literally NOBODY else tackles, so I'm with Paolo on that one. North Americans including Canadians have needed their 10 million candle spotlight shined on their failures and Matt and Trey do it with the funniest way possible.

But if you like that... PLEASE tell us you have watched Venture Bros. It's not political like South Park but it's such a grand, over-arching story of co-dependence between super-heroes and villains. It also has something I know you appreciate from your writings; actual, honest-to-god character development! No lie! Characters grow and change over the seasons, and without even noticing, you find yourself in a huge soap-opera of intermingled stories with some of the best god-damn characters I've seen in any cartoon. Two guys voice most of the characters. And it's funny as all hell. I've laughed louder at this show than Archer.

Regardless if you like Archer or not, you (and everyone else!) need to find the sort of 'origin-story' of the team who makes it; an awesome, incredibly written little two-season show called Frisky Dingo. It's about an scary-looking alien named Killface who tries to destroy the world with his mumbling, introverted alien-monster son by building a huge booster rigged to shoot the earth into the sun, but he's constantly thwarted by bureaucracy, inefficient mass-mailing services, and a millionaire frat-boy superhero and his henchmen, the Extacles.

Ever heard of Squidbillies? This aint for everyone. 12-minute long episodes, a dozen seasons, of a violently drunk and addicted squid living in Georgia. This show is angry... and very violent... and very, very, very politically incorrect, and it's bad for you, and it's a horrible show that nobody should ever watch, and I love it dearly. It's insanely badly drawn, with characters that barely move (kinda like early South Park), but they look like they're drawn by a drunk 5 year old... all of which, I swear to God, only adds to the charm of this cartoon. The thing is... it's got some of the best writing out there, and a couple of the best voice actors for their rolls. Early Cuyler, the main character, is voiced by a crazy person who mashes the English language to bits. You might hate it, but it should make you laugh before you turn it off.

Solar Opposites is a new one by Duncan Trussell that is worth every second. It's heartfelt and really introspective, the last episode of this season really hits you in the feels... but it's also super-silly and is kind of two shows in one; there is the 'main' action, the discussion happening between the main character and whoever he's talking to that episode, and also the 2nd show; the stuff happening in the background or to them as they talk. It's a very split-personality cartoon that makes you pay attention when watching. This one deserves being watched, I think, and I'm a new fan of Trussell's because of it.

And Primal. For heaven's sake, watch Primal. Not a single word said, nothing but a deep and dark fantasy of a caveman losing his family and teaming up with a lone dinosaur. Forget the impossibility of it, sink into the world, and see what Gennedy can do when given freedom. I have huge respect and love for Adventure Time, it's really the only kids show I've ever seen that made me get so hooked on story, but with Primal, he lets loose. It's killing time. Nobody can speak, it's grunts and screams only, and your TV will drip blood.

OMG I forgot about Squidbillies! It’s absolutely one of the best / worst cartoons made. The thing is, having spent a lot of my teen and early adult years in the rural parts of North Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee, I actual MET folks like Early Cuyler, Rusty and Lil. I’ve even met the bango playing kid from the movie “Deliverance” who worked in a restaurant in North Georgia.

So son watched South Park COVID opener and said it was a hoot. Pretty much hit all targets in sight and the pandemic is certainly a target rich environment for it.
