Is "Gastern Island" one that got rediscovered from the big reformat of the Archive? Because I seem to remember this one.

Thought it was. Can't check the backup I have, as my computer needs a new fan, and the CPU might cooked, too!

Right now, I'm using the old dependable clunky laptop from Talula running Linux Mint, but it lacks a file search utility, and the ones I've tried out don't work! Really, "Catfish"? There are no files named "doc" on this system? I don't think so.

Readers might be interested in this story because it also addresses the issue of regret, in that one of our heroes regrets his penectomy.

Ugh! I had to 'finger' my computer regularly, for a month, last year to keep it running.

My screen would go blank while the computer kept running; only fix was to restart, then it'd happen again 15 minutes later.

Took the side panel off, and saw that the fan on the graphics card had failed; it would run for a bit, then slow down and stop.

So, for a while, I'd keep her running by reaching around and flicking the fan-nub with my finger to get it spinning again.

In other words, I kept the computer running by giving it a reach-around and fingering its nub.

Eventually I pulled the card, moved the video output to the motherboard output, and threw the graphics card away after I wrecked it trying to glue a new fan onto it. I've been running with no card since... doesn't slow me down too terribly much.

Finally, a purely canonical-feeling extension of the infamous, the wonderful, the who-the-heck-really-knows-who-started-it-at-this-point, EA-founded, historical storyline of Neutersol!!

I've been hoping for this for ages, gentlemen. So glad somebody dusted this off and brought it into the 2020s.

At various times while reading it I thought I'd figured out who the anonymous co-author is, but none of my guesses ring true for long; could C van D be whispering ideas in Paolo's ear? Are there echoes of Slammr's thinking in here? Does it have bits that sound like they could have come from one of our newer authors? Yes to all, no to all. And who cares, anyway?

It was just pure fun to read. Thanks so much for taking time with this and fleshing out our young heroes. Well done, both of you! You bring real, vibrant life into this library.

Contrary to popular belief, I'm a nice guy to work with. I just help out when asked, add a bit, and if the author likes it, we take it.

I am not sure who wrote the very first Neutersol story. It really took off in the Simon Series by CvanD, though. I have been honoured greatly by being allowed to help out with those stories, and even write some of my own in that AU.

There actually was a veterinary drug back then by this name. The company wrote me, demanding I remove the stories or change the name. I told them to fuck off.

Like I said, I'm a pretty nice guy...
