This is a subject of which I've thought of in the past, and now again in the present environment of Covid19 and toilet paper hording. I'm OK in the TP department, as we shop at Costco and buy big bundles that last a while.

Supranatural mentioned a bidet in another thread;

We don't have a huge amount of toilet paper, but it would have been good had we just had a bidet before this virus came haha.

There are all kinds of them on the market. The stand alone kind, that sits on the floor next to the toilet. There is no way I can install one of these models. It would require a major renovation and moving of walls and addition of plumbing. Then there are the "toilet seat bidets" that can cost anywhere from $50 to $1000 (or more). They do everything from squirting cold water at your nether regions, to squirting warm water there in various oscillation modes; and blow warm air to dry your nether regions. There are some that even have anti-odor mode as in a fan and charcoal filter. I took a look at quiet a few different models on Amazon and just can't quite decide.

One good thing about them is that you're cleaner after using a bidet than if you don't; no matter how well you wipe. The other of course is that you cut way down on TP.

So, I thought I'd bring the subject up. Anyone have one? What do you think about it? Worth the money?

I've used three different ones. One in Quebec, the others at wealthy friends homes. Here's some points to consider:

- You will find bidets to be very weird at first. Some men I know can't get used to them. Basically, the more 'manly' (tough-guy) the dude is, the less he'll like it, even after trying it. This sounds unfair, but it's true in my experience. I'm a bit of a wimp, and I did NOT like it at first, but grew to like a bidet... but ONLY (see next point)

- Only buy one that uses warm water! An inline heater, if you can afford it. If you get no other bells or whistles, (which I'd recommend as extras drive up the price and are mostly just silly), get one that heats the water. Some people don't care, but in winter, the water here is freezing. Not fun! A good bidet will run the water slowly until it's warm, and only then ramp up the pressure to blast your ass.

- You still need toilet paper, in my opinion. Just enough to pat dry and/or pick off any stuck-on bits.

- DO NOT buy one of those little angled, clip-onto-the-rim add-on bidets. You will piss on it, you will angle it wrong, it will get in the way. They are an utter waste of time and money.

Bidet is french for "wet butt".

I used one at the Tokyo/Narita airport and liked it and it had all the bells and whistles. The last few years I have spent a lot of time in the Middle East and there it is common to have a handheld sprayer that you just wash your butt with. They are effective and cheap. You can get a setup on Amazon for about $40 and install in 10 minutes.

The cold water doesn’t bother me but it might if I lived in a really cold climate where the tap water was really cold. I asked an Arab friend about drying off after using and he said to not worry about it. I tried it and it’s really no issue.

Yes in February it is cold out side however I like my comfort so it is worm inside. (no outhouse)I have consider having a Bidet with bells & whistles.
