Self Penectomy

I AM NOT ADVOCATING SELF PENECTOMY
The ONLY safe way to have any type of castration is through a qualified surgeon.
With that disclaimer:
Notwithstanding all of the dire predictions of death here on the Archive, I have read litterally hundreds of accounts in the media and medical journals of people penectomizing themselves or it being done by wives, etc. and while it's not something you could do yourself and not have to get to the emergency room and face all kinds of psych questions, I still have never read an account of someone who actually died from having it done, despite not having "rushed" to the ER of even having called 911.
Take the Bobbit case, for example. Or the page (http://www.chiprowe.com/articles/nopenis.html) that lists case after case of wife or self penectomy. Or even the case in the late 60s where the 12 year old boy literally shot his penis and testicles off with a shotgun in a hunting accident.
Is there something about the anatomy of the genitals that makes this true?
