Best Rock Song Ever and a Runner Up?
You only get to pick one best song and a runner up
I know that you'll have to leave lots of great songs behind because my "almost made it" list is huge.
Number One: "White Wedding", Billy Idol
Runner Up: "I am Woman", Helen Ready

There's prob gonna be so much duplication so I'll list a couple obscure older ones I really like that "speak" to me.
Number One: "When a man loves a woman" - Percy Sledge, pretty old but perfectly sums up all a dude will go to find love and hold onto it.
Runner Up: "Heard it thru the grapevine" - Marvin Gaye, also really old but I like it. I like the background beat and especially the way it both pairs & contrasts the hurt, pain and internal conflict the guy is experiencing.
Hope I didn't read too much into your request or reveal too much about myself. I really do like old songs best.

I like your choices.
Oddly when I read "When a Man Loves a Woman" my mind instantly started to hear "When You're in Love with A Beautiful Woman" by Dr Hook. Then, I had to change the radio station in my head to "When a Man Loves a Woman".
Rog, we all know you like revealing yourself or was that exposing? Sometimes I get confused. (wink).

Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale, 1967
2nd? Hard to say. Just about anything from Bat Out of Hell 1977 by Meat Loaf.

Yes, to your #1, it was on my list along with the original 1964 version of "The Sound of Silence" - Simon & Garfunkel. When it was released in 1964 it was met with thunderous yawns. It was taken back to the studio and remixed and received lots of radio play. For the record, I was too young to remember 1964 but, found the original version a while back.
Also from Simon & Garfunkel who could ever not like a song that starts with "When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all"? -- "Kodachrome".

Traffic - John Barleycorn
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
That's two but i have to add the runners-up:
Procol Harum "Whiter Shade of Pale" is a very close along with "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" by Blue Oyster Cult and along with "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues ...
