Insurance?

Hi, my first post. Me and my therapist are now talking about gender reassignment surgery. She seems open to possibly writing me an approval letter for reassignment surgery. She was also the one who wrote my hormone letters shortly after I began seeing her. But nothing is guaranteed. I am needing a vulvaplasty (female parts, no canal).
But my feelings towards my genitals are getting worse and worse and I'm afraid of what I may do if I do not get something done soon. I'd absolutely love to get off tblockers and decrease my estradiol dosage by having an orchiectomy very soon, but the only way that will happen is if my insurance will cover it...which I need approval letters for. I am going into uni this fall and I need to save my money. My therapist seems to be somewhat hesitant anyways and there is no guarantee our insurance won't find try and something faulty w/ my GID history to deny coverage for any affirming surgeries.
I've heard of people getting orchiectomies from random local urologists about lying about testicular pain, and getting that covered as a non-gender surgery. I really do not want to lie.
Has anyone gotten their orchi or surgeries covered by insurance despite not being trans/"trans enough"? Did you need letters? Were you able to convince or find local urologists to help you? I hooope I am coherent here, in serious need of sleep lol. Thank you!

Check your insurance coverage, I have Aetna, they cover non-binary with 2 letters and 1 year hormones. I was referred to a local urologist, he offered a few options depending on future plans. Had my consult a few weeks ago, just waiting for them to get insurance approval, don't see any reason why it would be rejected.

There is specific mention of transition to the opposite sex in our coverage. Nothing about NB. Does insurance ever know if you met the "real life experience" thing or not?

Hey @Timeless_thoughts,
First welcome. You are in the right place. If you haven't done so yet, I'd recommend reading the sticky notes in the various forums.
I know that doctors and insurance can be very frustrating. Even with conditions having nothing to do with trans gender issues, it can be frustrating to get help.
My experience is that I need to always take it one step at a time. I was born male and have no desire to change anything regarding my gender or genitals. However, I have had way too many surgeries and medical procedures for other issues and am well aware that it can take longer to get approved for the surgery than getting a doctor to agree to do the surgery.
Even something as simple as wanting to change medications, add a medication, take away a medication can seem like it takes forever. I've even changed doctors and just left off a medication I no longer wanted to take and like magic it goes away. Now with electronic medical records, I'm not so sure that would work as well.
I don't have any advice. I do have experience, strength and hope to share. Keep good records, relax a bit, without becoming a problem stay on doctors and their staff to make sure all the required forms and records are submitted.
Most importantly, do no try to castrate yourself. That would complicate your desires as doctors and therapists will become far more interested in treating your desire to "self-harm" than they will be in helping with your transition.
Be kind to yourself. You've already managed to get on blockers and that is a big step. Celebrate the little wins along the way and eventually, you'll get where you want to be.
Once again, welcome to the forum.

That was the best put advice I've seen in a long time. Thank you for everything you said. It's exactly what folks need to hear.

Mine was covered by my medicare. It was not at the time related to my transition. I did have pain and hydrocells that were causing problems and my testes were non functional. As far as transition goes it is sadly a long process I just had a three month review and have at least nine more months to go before full approval for Gender Affirmation Surgery. Yes your therapist may seem to be hesitant especially if you have expressed self harm. The best thing is to be patient and follow the path set forth by your therapist. Yes it feels frustrating at times but the journey is well worth the time and effort you put into it. I am feeling frustrated at times like you especially with my age entering the equation I'm 62 and have been caged in a prison of a male body all my life. I wish you well and please be patient it's worth the wait.
