Dave (doesn’t) Crap on a movie - Widows (2018)

Widows (2018) (Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriquez, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Colin Ferrell, Liam Neeson, et alia)

Good movie.

The basic plot: A shootout leaves four thieves dead during an explosive armed robbery attempt between two gangs of thieves in Chicago. The “aggrieved gang leader” wants the widows of the dead gang to return his money somehow, - - The wives: Veronica, Linda, Alice and Belle - - have nothing in common but decide that they are going to do the next crime that was outlined in one of the dead husband’s diary. Yes, the idiot husband keep all his plans in a book. That’s not the complete story.

“Widows” is everything that a NEO-NOIR thriller should be - - dark, filled with betrayals, nasty murders, rotten gangsters. . . It took me two times to figure it all out. MY FAULT because I missed the first 5 to 10 minutes the first time. Don’t miss the beginning of the movie that sets up the story.

The women do execute the planned theft between coping with the deaths of husbands and boyfriends and dealing with a nasty crime lord. There is an ultimate betrayal in all of this.

There has been a bunch of “all women” versions of movies. This is the best of all of them. It doesn’t have wise-cracking women joking about menstrual cycles, or squeamishly silly dirty jokes, or high-five eye-winking fourth-wall breaks. “Widows” stays true to the Neo-Noir atmosphere and stays true to treating the women like they are persons and not merely brainless tits and ass walking around pretending like some of the all-female movie failures of the previous years.
