Edition #1 - - “at the casket”

The great-grandchildren (boys, 8 and 10) pulled a chair to the casket and started making their great-grandfather’s mouth into a smiley face.

My ex-wife had “family reunion” pictures taken at the casket.

I farted at a funeral once. It was devastating. I never confessed.

That's a rather minor transgression. If I should have an open casket funeral (not likely), I think it would be great if kids worked on my face to make a variety of expressions. I know that some family members would cheer them on.

Edition #2: "cellphones"

My grandfather’s cellphone rang. His ringtone was “Staying Alive.”

An estranged uncle’s cellphone rang. His ringtone was “Another One Bites the Dust.”

At a cremation, a cellphone rang. The ring tone was “Girl on Fire.”

{Personally, I think those are mild atrocities because people just can't turn off those ringers on their cellphones. I hear the beeps and low rings at the Symphony and the Public Theater.}

At my father in laws funeral the grand kids drew and wrote messages on the plain casket. One wrote 'my Opa is in this box'. I was telling a maori friend of mine, she said 'thats nothing! " up the coast, same thing but one kid wrote "Fuk you Koro, Nan said its cos you smoked"!

Edition #3: - alcohol

A random drunk woman came in to sing show-tunes to the deceased.

A drunken relative tried to share a flask filled with whiskey with the deceased by climbing into the casket and laying with the body. Spilled most of the whiskey in the casket.

The last funeral I went to was for a WWII veteran. So, he was given military honors. He'd been cremated and his urn was in the chapel. The honor guard started the ceremony and came down the aisle. It was either three or four servicemen in the honor guard. They were trooping the American Flag and the Naval Flag (he'd served in the Pacific during WWII).

They paused at the entrance and I stood up. I think people thought I was going to leave as I got a couple of dirty looks.

Then, they made an announcement to please stand for the trooping of the colors.

Seriously? American citizens didn't automatically stand for the honor guard? Since there was no coffin, the flag was already folded and in the ceremonial case for his widow.

We said the pledge of allegiance and they reminded people to either put their hands over their hearts or if they were a veteran, they could give the military salute. But, I was also shocked that Americans had to be reminded to salute the flag of our nation.

Yes, he was an older gentlemen and most people stopping doing the pledge when they left school. Yet, that should be something everyone should know.

I went to catholic school with Nuns and was an altar boy for 12 years, I'll have you know...

Way too funny!
