My Dinner with Hervé

is a biopic of Hervé Villechaize, the actor famous for being the sidekick on FANTASY ISLAND and one of the exotic James Bond villains.

I liked this. It’s a straightforward story, nothing fancy or special. No car chases, no gun fights.

The setup is simple:

Tate is back to his job as reporter at a prestigious magazine after a period of alcoholism with a 30 day chip and a new assignment - - the chance of a lifetime interview Gore Vidal for a major article and then get a 500 word “puff piece” on Villechaize. Of course, nothing in life goes as planned and the Gore Vidal interview ends before it begins. . . However, in the course of a night and a day, Tate gets the story of a lifetime - the life of Villechaize - - from the medical treatments in his childhood to increase his height, through his Shakespearean audition for actor, through Fantasy Island, the marriage, the drinking, womanizing, and spending of Villechaize, and finally his death by his own hand at the age of 50.

A sad story

It stars Peter Dinklage as Hervé Villechaize, Jamie Dornan as a struggling journalist Danny Tate. It was written and directed by Sacha Gervasi and is based on the interview Gervasi did with Villechaize in 1993.
