"Threat"

I got a message on my work email today from an alleged hacker saying he had all my personal information including the "adult" sites I'd visited and he'd share everything with my contacts if I didn't pay $900. It's clearly spam since his threats are so generic, but I kind of wanted to say "You know, I've been trying to come out as a eunuch for awhile but haven't heard the courage. So thank you!"

It sounds like a generic fishing attempt to extort money from you since most adult males using the internet do enjoy adult sites which is not shocking to anyone that adult males enjoy sexual sites.

Probably so.
-But it doesn't hurt to observe some basic rules of safe computing... not leaving gratuitous help for Bad People, clean up the cookies, history, consider a VPN (maybe Tor) with encryption if possible, care with giving too much away with browser id, operating system used, screen parameters.... all the usual stuff. If this doesn't mean anything to you, just ask someone you know to be expert. There's lots on the web about best practices...
Lastly, remember that to run something like EA takes considerable skill and downright hard work. If you suspect there might just be a question regarding the function of the site, tell Paolo or his capable hench-men / -women / -eunuchs, and don't forget to thank them for their efforts!

Gee, they must not think much of you. When I got threatened with that, they asked for $3800. What I will say is it came with a legitimate account name and a legitimate password I've used, included in the message.

And that account name & password combo probably came from one of umpteen data breeches that happen each year, or from harvesting your credentials using "malvertising" (malware apps running disguised as ads). The lesson is do not use your primary email account when signing up for "risky" web sites set up a "burner" account that can't easily be tracked back to you. I was amazed at the people that were exposed in the Ashley Madison breech that had signed up using the work email accounts (many with US Gov email addresses!). Even that is not necessarily enough, as in the case of the Yahoo breech, the "recovery" email address could still link to you. I have known some people that are paranoid enough to set up burner email accounts for each different site.
