Androcur and Finasteride

Post by Zebedeee (imported) »

I wonder if anyone has taken Finasteride (Propecia) together with Androcur?

I started taking Androcur just over three months ago, and I’m beginning to notice that I have some hair returning. Most of it is very fine ‘baby hair’, of which there is quite a lot, but mixed in with it are some ‘full size’ hairs.

If I can get the fine hair to return to full size then I would very nearly have a full head of hair back. With that in mind I’ve ordered some Biotin (vitamin B7), which is supposed to help, and I am wondering whether also taking Finasteride would encourage the hair to thicken up?

I do appreciate that taking Finasteride in addition to Androcur may be pointless as my testosterone level is already very low (last test 35 ng/dl), but I would be interested to hear others opinions, or if anyone has tried this?

I’m not in any rush as things are already moving in the right direction, and I’ll wait and see if the Biotin makes any difference. But I am tempted to add a 1mg dose of Finasteride to the 50mg Androcur and 20 mg Tamoxifen I take every morning.

I guess that my biggest fear is that taking more medication puts an unnecessary strain on my liver, and increases the risk of unpleasant side effects. I don’t want to be a prat and overdo it, but I am prepared to take a small risk if there’s a chance of getting my hair back!

I've taken 5mg of Finesteride since it was name brand only (so about 17 years or so). 1mg is the generic for Propecia and 5mg is the generic for Proscar.

Finesteride doesn't block testosterone, it blocks DHT (which is basically a crystallized form of testosterone). DHT is responsible for secondary sex characteristics during puberty and then tertiary sex characteristics (such as behavior, baldness and continued testicular growth) after puberty.

I've seen posts on here, in chat and on other websites that swear Finesteride causes a type of chemical castration. But, I've never noticed any adverse effects from it.

I started it for an enlarged prostate and it took several months to work. But, I have noticed that I'm loosing far less hair than my older brother and my next youngest brother (three years between me and the older and just over a year between me and the next youngest).

Good heavens; you are right to be concerned about liver function and other issues. You'd be hard pressed to find an Endocrinologist who would just jump into a concoction like that without lots of ground work. Hormones are very powerful critters and messing with one almost invariable affects others which may seem to be unrelated, to the uninitiated.

You ought to be on regular blood checks anyway with just the Androcur, let alone the Tamoxifen and now you want to add Finasteride? Please consider getting some qualified medical assistance.

Thank you, that’s very useful info… SIR!

I probably need to find out if there’s any DHT left in my system before considering Finasteride, as my low T level may have already knocked it out, and the fact that I have a little hair returning indicates that this may be the case.

Given what you’ve just told me I wish that I’d tried it years ago, as I may not have lost so much hair in the first place…

Yes, I must admit you’re not wrong!

Unfortunately here in the UK it’s not easy to find an endocrinologist who’s willing to prescribe anti androgens to someone who’s not transitioning MtF, or has prostate cancer. But I’m working on it. Fortunately I have a very supportive GP and therapist, and I’m having regular blood tests.

I may be getting a bit over excited, but I wasn’t expecting any hair regrowth and now I’m seeing a little - I want more!!

I figured that it was worth asking the question on here just in case someone’s already taken Finasteride whilst being chemically castrated (or physically for that matter), and what effect it had. Though of course if it led to disastrous consequences, they may no longer be around to answer the question..!

I take finasteride and metformin, between the two I am completely impotent. My hair did grow and I lost most the hair on my legs to the point that my wife suggested I just shave the remainder. I am not sure if this is the drugs or just my age. I have very feminine legs but that is about it. I was never super masculine and at this point fairly weak, have lost muscle mass. I also have A size breast. I have occasional sexual desire which is why I am here, I want this to be completely gone. I am considering chemical then surgical castration if this works out. My thoughts and mood are unlike I thought I would ever have.
