Just found out today that I have Stage 2 Prostate cancer, I don't know what this will lead to but I thought it would at least open a new discussion in this forum. I am supposed to decide between now and then about which way I want to go with it. Either surgery or radiation. Any experiences that of successes or failures?

Sorry to read of your diagnosis.

I do not speak from experience, however being in my 60s, I have several friends whom opted for the radiation treatments with great success to destroy the cancer. From their experiences I learned they had 30 or so treatments almost daily until finished. They indicated the radiation treatments were not as bad as they thought they would be, with only some blood in the urine occasionally, likely from irritation from the procedure method.

Following treatment, they said they experienced difficulty obtaining erection, shrunken testicles, and small amount of clear ejaculate with orgasm. None experienced incontinence, which is a higher risk with the surgery.

Best wishes for whatever treatment path you choose to persue.

bp301234, sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I've had some prostate problems myself and I've found that there are many options, treatments, etc. The more information you have, the better decisions you can make. Don't be afraid to seek a second option. I found the Prostate Cancer foundation (pcf.org) is also a good resource.

Thank you for the replies. I have decided to go with surgery and if there is any spreading, mop up the rest with radiation. All of these side effects were definitely factored in. Still can't believe that I have cancer. Still kind of surreal. Again, thanks for the replies.

bp,

I'm so sorry to hear about your prostate cancer diagnosis. Best of luck with the surgery and the followup. I know from experience with different cancer what a shock it can be. And, how much information there is to take in all at once.

My best advice is to breathe and make sure you have time to process everything. I found getting a 2nd and even a 3rd opinion was very helpful. After seeing three doctors, I had my surgery done by the 2nd opinion - but valued all the input from each doctor.

With so many things to do and to decide, take all the help offered to you. Family, friends, folks on the corner - they all mean it when they say they'll help. It's not easy, but for me it turned out to be family that helped me through.

Keep in touch with us, and let us know how it's going.
