The Imitation Game (movie about Alan Turing)

Post by Prudence (imported) »

Watched "The Imitation Game" a few days ago. I found the story very interesting and really enjoyed the movie. Highly recommended. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Alan Turing, an eccentric genius code-breaker and mathematician who helped the Brittish crack the German's "unbreakable" Enigma code used to encrypt messages during World War II, and is considered one of the fathers of modern day computers and computer theory. Keira Knightley plays his assistant, Joan Clarke.

The movie tells the story of how Alan Turing got in with British Intelligence, despite not being well-liked by both his superiors and his collegues. How they were able to get past their differences and personality quirks, and create the machine that cracked Enigma. It is a mixture of wartime spy novel, race-against-time, mystery, emotion, tragedy, thriller, and characters needing to keep secrets or risk losing it all. I'm not very good at reviewing movies and what I've written hardly does this film justice. Google it and see what others have said. Or just watch it -- its a great movie!

** Spoiler Alert if you don't already know the historical story of Alan Turing **

Something of particular interest to members of EA is, towards the end of the movie, Alan Turing is outed as a homosexual, and forced to take anti-androgens to cure his "indecency" (since, at the time, homosexuality was a crime).
