My 50-year Trek to Eunuchville

Here is my somewhat atypical story.

Contracted the mumps at age 20. Experienced testicle swelling and agony for about a week. When the swelling went down the left testicle was gone – only a nub of scar tissue remained. The right one shrank by about 1/3 and was extremely sensitive on the inner side. I mourned my loss and got on with life. The army insisted on my presence for a couple of years, where I discovered that I fit in with all the other guys just fine. All sizes and shapes of scrotums visited the showers.

Two years after the army stint I suffered a strange rash that spread all over the groin area and the upper inner thighs. The doctor was clueless but gave me an ointment that seemed to work. When I stopped using the ointment the rash came right back. The theory given me was that the cause of the rash was incubating under my foreskin, so the doctor shrugged and told me to just have that thing snipped off and all would be well. After the surgery I found that all of the inner mucous membrane had been removed, with the outer skin sutured directly to the base of the glans. Not much sensitivity left. No rash, either.

The genital fairy did not fly over my crib.

A wonderful woman came along who accepted me as I was. In spite of never using birth control (I thought I was sterile), we had one child. We were happily married, and when she died we had been married 35 years.

Somewhere between the ages of 40 to 50 I noticed a change in that right testicle. The sensitivity increased, accompanied by a dull background ache, with occasional sharp spasms so intense I had to grunt loudly. After telling my urologist that I wanted an end to the pain, he agreed to a bilateral orchiectomy. I did not want an empty sack. I wanted implants for the fun of having balls again. This happened just as all silicone prosthetics were being recalled because of suspected breast implant problems. We agreed to forego anything radical. I was still getting testosterone from that right ball.

After a few years of this increased pain I visited a pain clinic, with my urology records, and took narcotics for the next 13 years. After the government took over pain control (everyone who takes narcotics is an addict – didn’t you know?), I was one of the patients released. “Back pain we understand. Joint pain we understand. Testicle pain? Oh, you’re just making that up.”

Meanwhile, I visited an endocrinologist to check my thyroid level (Graves Disease) who discovered I had almost no testosterone. Ah-HAH! This is why my wife complained of less sex. This is why I started crying during adventure movies and TV comedies. This is why my fantasies turned from sex to pizza. I began using AndroGel, which was messy, a lot of trouble, and was really hit-and-miss.

Finally, I revisited the urology clinic – different doctor this time – and asked for a bilateral inguinal orchiectomy. He said “Sure,” and set up the surgery date. I was surprised that it was an outpatient surgery. Two incisions in the lower abdomen seemed to call for overnight observation. Two weeks later all was well, and I now receive biweekly TRT injections.

Another problem converging on all of this was a persistent depression. SSRI’s did not work, so I am now on Elavil, and I experience all of the sexual side effects.

The conclusion: At 69 year of age, I am thoroughly castrated, but with an intact sack and a couple of pain-free balls to play with, getting TRT, yet still experiencing impotence and lack of libido. I happily call myself a eunuch. Maybe, considering all of this, I became a eunuch through a series of trials and appreciate it on a unique level.
