To all of my friends on the Archive,

I have not posted in a few months, Ihave been busy. I have been in Hawai'i now for a couple years and Iam in the process of buying a home, we close escrow in a coupleweeks, its a 3 bed 2 bath in a sub-division that is about 5% filled. Its a jungle and the property behind me I will partly clear forchickens, rabbits and a greenhouse, this will not be a problem as theabsent owner will most likely never come back and if he does, I willmove my stuff, no issue.

Living here is not for everybody thatis for sure, Pele must accept you, meaning you must accept this lifestile, its slower, the local quinine is much different than you haveever had, the people here live longer then anywhere in the countryand are very friendly. It is truly a life style change that is notfor everybody, its not the main land or Honolulu, its the big islandand maybe the most remote place on earth.

Yesterday I picked up a couple friendsin town (that the town of Pahoa, 3 miles from my new home) and wedrove 2 hours north to watch a girls flat track roller derby match, afriend was one of the refs, (Reba Macinflyer). We ate at a localplace called Tex and had one of the best meals I have had in years, served on paper plates with plastic forks and like all great placesto eat we started with dessert first, that's Tex'sFamous Malasadas from Honoka'a Hawaii.I had mine stuffed with the apple filling. I can vision myselfdriving up there just for one or three of these pastries. Yes it wasthat good, served hot.

The best food here is grown local, eventhe beef is local as one of the biggest cattle ranches in the countryis on this island, all grass fed beef. Tuna is a local favoriteserved many different ways and usually raw. Some of the greatesttreats are found at the local 7/11, things that you will never findon the main land but can find in Japan. Another place we like is a 24hour diner called Kens, where people like BJ Penn eats at, picture onthe wall and everything, they serve a Loco Moco but for the braveand really hungry or meal for 4 you can order a “Sumo” Moco. Its6 scoops of rice, 5 hamburger patties, 3 eggs with a brown gravy overthe top. Yes I have had the Loco Moco, 2 of everything covered withbrown gravy. truly a gastronomical delight. Another place is right inPahoa, the Black Rock Cafe where you can order Eggs Benedict, ½ sideof Biscuits and gravy or maybe Escargot if you like that sort ofthing.

We have our share of disasters likeanyplace, a Hurricane has hit us, lava flows and the worst of all adock strike. You must remember that everything you want is shippedfrom the mainland, like paper towels, toilet paper etc. Like allplaces you make out a list of what you need from the store, howeveryou may not find it, no problem, it may be there next week. Somethings are truly seasonal like Cranberry sauce or canned Yams,Turkey, etc. Your favorite ice cream may only be at one store andthey might be out of it this week. One of my favorite places to shopis Amazon, they deliver it right to your door. Gas is more expensive,$2.45 yesterday, however you don't need to heat your home, if its tohot, open a window, to cold – close it. I will have power from thelocal electric company however my water will come from the catchmenttank behind the house, 9600 gals. Its rain water off the roof thatyou then treat to make it drinkable.

Yes, life here is different and not foreverybody.

It is a life stile change for sure, andwith me getting a new house I will have even less time to visit oldhaunts. I know this must seem like I am rambling but I guess what Iam really saying is that I have moved, not only physically butmentally, the Archive which has been my home for many years no longerhas anything for me, nor do I have anything to give. I have severalfriends that I am still in contact with and that will continue, asfor the rest its time for me to move on.

So in the words of Heinlein,

“When the ship lifts, all bills arepaid. No regrets.”

Good bye and good luck,

Riverwind

Nothing to offer? I don't believe it. I cherish your story of cutting chicken for a meal with a Great Dane with it's paws on your shoulder and a beagle clawing at your calves. all with a cat looking on.. Animal stories are always good.

It is sad when one of those who you see as one of the founders of the site moves on. For one reason or another. In any case - we will all move on sooner or later.

It doesn't make it less sad.

If you ever want to contact me - I have sent my mail address in PM.
