I knew squirrels like nuts, but I had no idea that's how they got them.

This may help to explain my last cat. (He died of old age at somewhere around 13 or 14.) He arrived as a very ragged and underfed stray. He had already been castrated before he wandered in. Once he returned to health, he was death on squirrels. He laid out a dead one on the front porch at least once a week.
One time he lost. We found him with his belly ripped open by a squirrel. The vet patched him up and he spent a couple of weeks confined inside the house against his will for recuperation–yowling at the door to get out and spraying on the wall to emphasize what he wanted. The morning after he was released, we found FIVE dead squirrels on the front porch. It was only his last few weeks when he wasn't bringing us dead quadrupeds.
