Like many people suffering from conflicts about their gender identity, 30-year-old Li Xiongjin has felt trapped in the wrong body for a long time.

Li, who was born a man in Hunan, central China, did the unthinkable in a bid to become a woman, only to suffering massive blood loss and nearly dying.

In a recent article on People's Daily Online, Li spoke of the social pressure in China in order to pursue womanhood.

Last month, for the first time, Li decided to go through with the sexual reassignment surgery to finish the transformation from male to female.

Li's parents, who work for a small resort in rural Guangdong, had to approve the surgery, a predicament given that they did not know.

Their first reaction was that of anger. They were completely against the surgery and were embarrassed by the prospect of revealing to everyone that their son wanted to become a woman.

However, after persistent protests from Li, they finally gave in, fearing something drastic after the castration.

Even so, they still find it difficult to refer to Li as their daughter rather than son.

At the same time, Li's mother felt guilty of not truly understanding her son. She said: 'I had no idea. I feel like I'm not her mother.'
