A "Death Note" looks like a black notebook usually held by one of the Japanese Gods of Death. The Gods of Death in Japanese lore are called SHINIGAMI. The Shinigami may, if bored, drop their notebook where a human can find it. When the human owner writes a name in the Death Note while picturing a person's face, the person dies.
Ryuk, the Shinigami, is bored and so he drops his book.
Light Yagami, a bored high school senior finds the a Death Note and thus begins an epic battle between Light and the police over who will hold dominance. Light becomes "Kira" the person who all may petition and find redress to crimes and a police person named "L" who is Light Yagami's equal in sheer brilliance.
The two minds plot against each other with "L" meting out death to criminals, rapists, robbers, and generally bad guys, and "L" who wishes to restore the balance of the world and stop the killings. As they do, the Cult of Kira as a God who metes out life and death, grows.
12 volumes, 6 books -- distinctive black covers.
Like the Death Note itself.

Re: Death Note -- a manga (Japanese Illustrated story)
I've seen the anime, but have not read the manga. Just looked it up on google images and LOVE the artwork -- black and white suits it better I think.
I've recently gotten interested in Japanese folklore and mythology -- check out the book "Yokai Attack" if Death Note sparked your interest!

an update:
NETFLIX just posted a trailer for a whitewashed (westernized) movie version of DEATH NOTE.
Willem Dafoe plays RYUK the Shinigami and is as scary as anything I've seen.
The movie is due on NETFLIX on August 25th.

I liked the anime.
I'm waiting for a "free" week of Netflix. Then I will binge the anime.

STARZ channels have the anime from 2006/2007, all 38 of them. I'm on episode 5. A couple or three every day will take a while.

The premise of Death Note -- that someone can write a name in a notebook and that person dies and Light Yagami's desires to create his utopia are fascinating.
