Wanting to stay healthy

Hey everyone,
I'll try to keep the useless information to a minimum. I am 53 y.o. and she is 65. I'm taking a couple meds to remove my desire and ability to help out my wife. She no longer has any sexual desire but felt incredibly guilty about my hunger. So, she asked me to try chemical castration. I agreed and bought Androcur from an overseas pharmacy. No sweat at all. I began taking 100mg twice daily May 19 of this year. At the one month mark we added 1 mg of Finasteride which has gradually been increased to 3mg daily. We have seen a dramatic effect with the meds. I occasionally still get that tingly aroused 'feeling' in my gut but get no physical reaction. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, I am asking for advice on how to avoid harming myself. Such as the osteoporosis I see mentioned several places. I had a brief bout of a slight depression during the 5th or 6th week, but that has definitely passed. Not too worried about weight gain as I've always cut back the food whenever I've gotten to a certain weight. I'm certain I haven't come across all the detrimental things associated with hormone treatment. We'd like to hear from anybody that has something to offer. Thanks so much for your assistance.
Les & Bec

Go to your doctor, explain what you've been up to, and that you're happy with the results thus far.
It would be far better for your physician to know what you're up to and assist you than for you to keep self medicating. Medications are no joke and not something you should mess around with without a doctor involved. They will also know far better about the issues with the drug interactions and side effects than any of us here, and what needs to happen should they fall out of balance.

L T said it very well. You should be monitored by medical professionals particularly as you get older. --FLO--

Hey guys,
It was my mistake, but I should have asked for information and experiences from those who are on a 'do it yourself' type program. I do have a lab that will run tests for me with no Dr orders and I'm getting a full panel which will include LFTs and free testosterone. I appreciate the concern of those who replied, but this is not something we would share with anyone other than maybe our adult daughter. And that's only because as a nosy teenager she snooped and discovered her parents were very experimental and she has always been nonjudgmental. This will remain a private affair otherwise. We will watch my lab values and take them into full account as to continuing treatment, adjusting dosages or even ending the regimen. Thanks again everybody, Les & Bec

Finasteride is probably not necessary if your T is pretty low. It has some pretty nasty side effects that can include depression. You could probably benefit from using some progesterone cream daily which is good for your mind, body and bones without causing feminization.
"Rates of depressive symptoms (BDI-II score ≥ 14) were significantly higher in the former finasteride users (75%; 46/61) as compared to the controls (10%; 3/29) (P < .0001). Moderate or severe depressive symptoms (BDI-II score ≥ 20) were present in 64% (39/61) of the finasteride group and 0% of the controls. Suicidal thoughts were present in 44% (27/61) of the former finasteride users and in 3% (1/29) of the controls (P < .0001)."

I'm begging you... do not do DIY with medications. It's a very dangerous thing. I'm not trying to smash your dream, I'm trying to keep you from accidentally killing yourself. The lab can run values all day long, but unless you know what those values mean, how they relate to your own special body chemistry, and how other drugs you may be taking are interacting with the chemical castration drugs, you don't know it's safe. I'm guessing you have neither the background or training to know when you're in danger.
Keep in mind, this is coming from somebody with a professional license and also happens to be heavily modified. Do what you will, but you've been warned and I won't feel the least bit sorry for you if you end up with issues if you continue down this path.

Jess,
Thanks so much. I knew I needed some form of estrogen to help stave off osteoporosis, just wasn't sure where to start with it. I know I can look it up, and probably will have by the time you get a chance to reply, but is the progesterone cream also a prescription only med? If so, hopefully my overseas pharmacy carries it. My plan is to only take the Androcur & Finasteride at my current doses until it is apparent the effects are permanent then gradually cut back to 25 mg Androcur & 1 mg Finasteride. Thanks again for the information. Have a great day. Les

I agree with LT. While I understand the difficulty in sharing your intentions even with a medical professional, if you find the right medical professional they will take it in stride. It probably depends on whether you live in a big city or a rural environment. In a big city, the doctors have "seen it all" and in my experience are less likely to be moralistic about treatments.
I have had to broach the subject with many doctors, and have even ended up in emergency several times due to genital self-harm -- you can imagine going to ER because you shoved a fishhook down your urethra! Yes, I'm sure the nurses got a giggle out of my predicament, but they still were professional enough to get me treatment.
My suggestion is to start with a psychiatrist, especially one that specializes in sexual or transgender issues. They are often able to prescribe medication directly. And they can also help manage depression issues.
So find a doctor in the nearest big city that specializes in such things. You might need to try a couple. But I'm sure you'll find a professional that can help you manage.
By the way, have you considered the alternative -- having your wife taking some supplemental testosterone to pick up her sex drive. You can get androforte cream online easily and it is very simple and effective. Many people, including women, are surprised with the huge uplift in physical and mental energy that a bit of testosterone can give. So instead of you facing all the side effects of low hormones, maybe she could consider adjusting hers in a positive way. Just a suggestion.

Split,
Seems everyone is really pushing the Dr thing. So, OK, I'll search for a trans friendly doc here in the Dallas area. If they'll work with me, I'll work with them. I'll only go as far as an MD. Not doing the shrink thing. Bec considered and discarded the hormone idea. She didn't want to deal with the side effects. And before anyone flames her, Bec gave me everything I ever asked sexually until she lost her desire, so she is not the bitch some may think. It's just my turn to give.

Have you considered physical castration at all. This is the easiest and safest method to get rid of your testosterone. I have been surgically castrated, but for another reason to the one that you have. There are some docs who will do it for you on only informed consent or you can follow the route that I did and inject your testicles with calcium chloride, which will cause sufficient damage to them that a doc will happily remove them for you, like mine did for me.
This way you won't need to take all the chemical castration drugs to achieve your desired solution and it is safe, permanent and effective. Another plus with physical castration is that you will not have to worry about the nasty side effects of the chemical castration.
You will however need to take some form of HRT to ward off losing bone density, but you can use a very low dosage of testosterone for this, just enough to prevent osteoporosis and depression but not enough to cause a resumption of desire.
Should you contemplate the calcium chloride route, first read the appropriate thread from start to finish so you know what to do and what to expect. Several of us on the forum have successfully used this route to lose our testicles.
