History Channel has been showing their mini series,

Texas Rising.

Very well done. I suspect the depiction of the Battle of San Jacinto

is gonna be portrayed bloody and cruel. Just as Goliad and the Alamo was portrayed.

Hey it was the only tune all three musicians knew.

Watch for the Twin Sisters. A couple of field pieces brought by Ohio volunteers.

They had no shot nor practice but in the first firing took out the sole Mexican cannon with scrap metal.

Houston had two horses shot out from under him. One of those horse lethal shots shattered his ankle.

I suspect that "Texas Rising" is Texas-style history: "History as it OUGHT to have been, not as it actually was." The state school board is currently trying to rewrite U.S. history in interesting ways.

The series will probably NOT talk about the abolition of slavery by the Mexican government as a major precipitating factor in the Texas war for independence. Many (maybe most) of the early Texas "patriots" were slaveholders anxious to keep their property. Not mentioned in any Texas history book that I've read (but in some non-Texas based ones) is that both William Travis' slave Joe and Jim Bowie's slave Sam were freed by the Mexican army after the Battle of the Alamo. Many escaped slaves (from the Anglo slaveholders of Texas) fought alongside the Mexican army.

Actually I think we should give them what they want, the independent country of Texas, drop them pick up Puerto Rico and we don't even need to change the flag and the best thing is we can build a wall around it.

I haven't watched the show (TEXAS RISING). I'm not fond of historical reenactments like that and I'm involved in editing a 70,000 word anthology (ten stories). Too much work.

A friend since the late sixties, Mexican American - no espaniol

and I sometimes did "parallel study".

We followed a topic, studies and discussed when we got together.

We spent years studying Texas from colonization through acquisition of Statehood

after being an independent nation for 10 years.

We even to antique copies of "The Raven", by Marquis James. Check it out.

They made the revolver for officers in the Texas Navy.

So far I am very satisfied with the portrayal.

I imagine the next episode, dealing with "frustration"

will be frustrating to watch.

Sam Houston was a very educated man for his times.

His retreat is reminiscent of George Washington holding his army together

and the choosing "his" ground, ala Wellington.

It may have been out best, parallel study topic.

As for the characterization of Antonio Lopez y Santa Anna.

Tonight's new episode of

Texas Rising

was not the droll, boring, episode I had thought it would be.

The Twin Sisters have arrived and they are all at San Jacinto along Buffalo Bayou.

Bill Paxton's portrayal of Houston is good.

Like George Washington, it must be a hard character to portray.

I still like Raul Julia as the best Antonio Lopez y Santa Anna

BTW If you liked Justified, you will see some familiar faces,

like the sullen teenage Crowe kid and Jeremy Davis. Jeff Fahey too.

According to "The Raven" by Marquis James, with reproduced eye witness maps of the battle,

General Antonio Lopez Y Santa Anna only had one artillary field piece.
