A high school student from Shandong Province decided that he wanted a life without sin and vice, so he performed a gruesome home surgery on his own testicles in order to eliminate his sex drive.

According to Minnan Online (http://www.minnanwang.cn/news/20150311/c_59575.html), the student turned up at Shandong Weihai 404 Hospital on 6 March with horrifically mutilated genitals, saying that his injury was self-inflicted. The student, who is not identified by name, had used a knife to cut out one of his own testicles and then crudely stitch himself back up. Only hours later when he began to feel unwell during the middle of the night did he decide to go to the nearest hospital.

The boy's parents, who rushed in from outside the province, arrived only to be told the bad news; owing to the length of time between removal of the testicle and arrival at the hospital, there was no hope for reattachment, although due to his youth there was a possibility that with time he would regain reproductive function.

This isn't the first time that DIY operations have made headlines in China. In the summer of 2013 a Hong Kong resident decided to give himself a sex change (http://shanghaiist.com/2013/01/08/hong_ ... elf_in.php), attempting to remove both of his testicles and become a woman. Last year a farmer from Anhui had no choice but to amputate both of his feet (http://shanghaiist.com/2014/05/15/anhui ... n-feet.php) when infections due to frostbite took hold and he was unable to afford the medical fees.
