Edge of Tomorrow

Post by Dave (imported) »

Edge of Tomorrow is a Sci-Fi movie with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

The setup is that a meteor brings a race of aliens and they are taking over the earth. They have all of Europe and the humans are going to invade in one huge push. Now the Sci-Fi twist is this, William Cage (Tom Cruise) person is merely. Somehow he pisses off a general and gets sent to the front lines. He rather quickly dies in the giant invasion but as he does, he gets alien blood on him and the day resets. It takes him a little while to figure out what is happening and what he has to do.

It turns out that the Alien Alpha that controls all of the aliens can control time and resets each loss to a day before and then tells the other aliens how to win. So now Cage finds himself teamed with Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) in a multi day search for this alien. She once had the same power as he did and lost it. The time resets are ingenious and no one day mimics another day. That would be terribly boring in a movie. There must be close to 150 or so time resets. We don't see all the time resets but it is obvious that they are occurring. Eventually Cage and Rita go after the Alpha alien and all sorts of plot twists occur.

This is a better story than I thought it was going to be. The way it fits together works well. The end is satisfying.

This sounds like Ground Hog day revisited without Bill Murray who is a better actor then Tom Cruise which is not saying much.

Yes my opinion of both are rather low.

There is that aspect of "living the day over and over to get it right."

However, in GROUND HOG, getting ir right means finding a way to love the girl and redeem Bill Murray's ignorant character. Also, There is no explanation why the day repeats other than to save Bill Murray.

In EDGE OF TOMORRROW, the William Cage character starts out the same way (despicable in one scene only) but does not end in the same way. Also, the implication of the first action sequence is that the aliens know what is going to happen because they are manipulating time.

How that ability to manipulate time and how William Cage (Cruise) and his partner (Emily Blunt) learn what to do to defeat the aliens. It is not a straightforward path of just doing the right thing. Nor is it one path. Plus, it's not just one time event. The timeline seems to reset every day and worse the aliens carry some knowledge through the resets just as Cage does. So while Bill Murray just had to learn one set of moves and one set of behavioral changes, William Cage has to learn the proper tactics to defeat the aliens.
