I just looked at Cainanite's profile and he was last on the EU on 04-13-2014 09:30. That is almost two weeks ago. Does anyone know what happened to him? I hope he is well.

I spoke with Cainanite on the telephone on the 20th. He's extraordinarily busy at work.

I just spoke briefly to Cainanite on the phone. It's 8:30 pm and he was just walking in the door after work. He's basically exhausted. He's been putting in 7 day weeks of 60 to 70 hours each. His life seems to be work, feed his cats, make dinner, and crash for the night.

Hmmm... must be a Canadian thing.

My boss told me three weeks ago he is "expecting" a full 10-hour shift out of me 6 out of 7 days a week.

This is what "Full Employment" (as per the gov't-run Employment Insurance data) does; manufacturing/building trades (that is, trades that actually make things, a.k.a. that now-rare-sector that is not a 'service' industry) have to work ever-increasing hours at shitty pay (unless you get lucky with the right company/industry) because businesses just cannot find enough workers.

It's a double-edged sword, too. Yes, there are tons of hours for you if you want a job, but if you can't keep up, loyalty and time served mean nothing; if I refuse the overtime, my company that I've worked for for 14 years will boot my ass, and GLADLY, because a rookie can be trained over time to my level for a hell of a lot less money than they pay me right now. The old adage that it costs a lot to hire a new body is bullshit; H.R. departments are streamlined for that nowadays. The wage savings are far more valuable.

Sorry! Barely on topic. Cainanite, when you see this, I sympathize! Keep truckin', dude. Try to eat properly, if at all possible. That's the hardest part for me.

now adays. I was laid off after 9 years at one company after routinely putting in 12 hours days. They only care about their bottom line.

It is an imperfect world and I know the value of keeping a job in these uncertain economic times. And no it is not just a "Canadian thing" I'm a Toronto boy myself.

For my two cents worth I would just say don't let your job destroy your health, when all is said and done, I don't think anyone has ever looked back on their life and said "Gee, I wished I'd spent more time at the office"

that 70hr/wk thing Cainanite is doing is likely a short-term thing. I do 4 10hr shifts/wk & whenever the other night auditor at my hotel quits or gets fired, I get stuck with 70hr-weeks myself. between the hiring process & training, it takes no less than 2 weeks(if we knew it was coming & posted ads early) & has taken over 2 months(1st 2 hires didn't work out).

thing is, 70hr-weeks involve a crazy amount of overtime pay. no sane employer pays out like that any longer than they have to.
