Reading through this one makes one think to the old English execution method of hanging, drawing, and quartering, the last part where the condemned is tied down and has their genitals and entrails removed and cast into a burning brazier before their very eyes. The hopelessness that accompanies seeing your parts destroyed must make one's punishment feel so much more final and permanent. Once it is gone there is no chance for reattachment! Hopefully we'll read a second part where David's sentence is carried out. As he seems to be the narrator we'll be able to find out firsthand the pain and despair he feels.
