We are aware that there are some strange server issues going on right now. There have been problems ever since the server was the victim of a Denial of Service/Hack attempt a few weeks ago.

We are working with the techs at the ISP to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

If there is ever a time where the Archive is down, please note that the chat rooms run on a different server, so you can get the most current information by logging in with an IRC client (download Bersirc (http://www.eunuch.org/Setup.exe) - it comes preconfigured for the Archive chatrooms) in the event of a server melt down.

In the mean time this forum is open for announcements from the moderators and administrators and for comments from you guys.

Well, this morning, Thursday 22 August, I was unable to reach The Eunuch Archives at all. This evening, 7:35 PM, I reached the home page. Clicking on the left hand side of the page for the link to the message board gave me an all-blue screen and little else. So I backed out, and hit the message board link under the (grossly inflated) number of people who had posted in the last 24 hours, and that link worked.

A couple of times previously, when on the message board, I click on the little arrow that says to go to the first unread message of a thred, and it doesn't work, I get another page not available error. But if I click on the arrow at the right to go to the last person's post, I get there. This is a very intermittent problem.

At least I was able to get this far. Keep up the good work.

Unrelated to the current issue, Andrew, but those post numbers are not inflated. Then can not be because that number is generated dynamically each time the page loads. The script actually counts the number of posts in a 24 hour period.

Late Monday night, early Tuesday morning, I had trouble with the message board and the chat rooms. I was on the message boards clicking on another link, and I got page unavailable. When I tried to go back to the previous page, same thing, page unavailable. I could not get onto the EA message board again that night. So I started up the chat room software (Bersirc) and got the same message, page unavailable. On Tuesday night I got into the chat room and asked Luvpain about it, but he said he was unaware of any problems at that time. Since then I have had no problems.

One thing I would like to add as well, and it's only a bit of common sense since someone 'yelled at me' for it via email later.

Think - [email protected] ... ok, the Archive server is down or going loopy. If you emailed this address and didnt' get a reply from one of us, then don't you think it might be because the EMAIL DIDN'T MAKE IT due to the SERVER problem?

If the pages won't load, chances are the EMAIL won't go either .....

I know it's hard to do without EA for a bit during the day, but please try. Like bad pennies, we always come back.

Well, if you say so, but it sure doesn't seem as if there are that many posts. My PERCEPTION is a much lower number. And so it goes...

Andrew, I have noticed the issue with Page not found error myself. Usually All I have to do is click the back button and try the link again and it works.

On August 21, When clicking the "New story index" link on the Archive home page, I get a page with the following error message.

Show me new files up to _____ days old.

Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /usr/client2/vs/eunuch.org/www/eunuch.org/phpWrite/newfiles.php on line 64

Query Error: Got error -1 from table handler

You are not the only one who got that message. I tried to send it via an email to the archive administrator but it may not have got through.

The first indication was the 'page not found' message. This continued for quite a time on the 20th but I was later able to get onto the board.

The next day I got the same message as you did although I was able to get to the message boards. Response was absolutely dire so I disconnected and tried about 2 hours later when I got in with no difficulty.

When I first got the problem I thought that it might be due to excessive traffic because the symptoms are similar. The only argument against that and the reason why I tried to alert the administrators was that normally, the Archive is the one place where I do not get such problems.

I just want to say thanks to all of the people who keep the Archive running. We know that these things are nearly always caused by external influences. But I would like you to understand that we do appreciate the efforts you take to try and keep the service running.

Page Not Found and MySQL errors are symptoms of the problems the server is experiencing. It's the entire BMEworld server that hosts the Archive, not just the Archive specifically.

As an aside we have a new 404 error page thanks to talula ... one that shows up if you type a page url wrong or something.
