BYU-Idaho warns its students against masturbation in earnest war-themed video

Mormon anti-masturbation video [YouTube]

A motivational video released by Brigham Young University–Idaho has garnered attention online for urging students to identify to religious officials friends they think are masturbating too much. And it compares the effort to rescuing a fellow soldier during war.

“If you need to, talk to your bishop,” school president Kim B. Clark says in the video, “Wounded On The Battlefield,” which was released last month. “Tell someone who can do something that you have a friend in trouble.”

The video opens with footage of a young man, who Clark says is “spiritually wounded on the battlefield of the Great War,” alone in a darkened room because of an addiction to pornography, while his roommate leaves, apparently feeling unable to help. Clark does not identify the “Great War” in question.

Suddenly, the scene shifts to a battlefield, with the porn-addled young man trapped in the crossfire and the roommate torn between helping him and staying behind safe cover.

“In our modern society, the enemy has spread fear of getting involved when someone’s in trouble, and has fostered a social stigma against people who speak up in the face of evil,” Clark warns over ominous music. “The enemy whispers, ‘Don’t get involved.’”

Of course, the roommate goes to his fallen friend’s (metaphorical) rescue, delivering him to what seems to be a church official before they (and several young female churchgoers) celebrate his return to “normalcy.”

Comments have been disabled on the video’s YouTube page, but reviews elsewhere describe it as “awkward and creepy,” and “bizarre.”

There's lots of this thinking (or lack of it) in our neighborhood. It actually gets even more bizarre but to stay on topic...

I guess it's nothing new, even if it is a little depressing. Cures in the past seem to have included everything from a bris periah radical circ to castration, all to save the wanker from blindness or worse. At least this is only a movie and and an invitation to make an idiot of oneself with the bishop. -And the likelihood of success persuading the average undergrad to stop pulling his plonker? Not a lot of rational thought in evidence here.

This may be too political (and so get deleted), but I was reading the most bizarre conversation yesterday which touches upon this very idea.

A dad was talking about how much he'd like to share the HBO series "A Game of Thrones" with his 12yo sun, and was wondering if anyone had created a version that had 'all those gratuitous sex scenes' cut out. He figured that without the nudity and sex, somehow the show would become acceptable viewing for a 12yo. Somehow the massively gratuitous violence, death and gore is acceptable, but heaven forbid the kid be exposed to sex. It just boggles the mind, just as much as the video at the top of the thread.

I'll take a risk here. -Maybe the Censor is away, enjoying a quick, well never mind... If I find him, I'll tell the bishop.

Again, taking the aspect in common between the head quotation in this thread and an old Jay Leno quote, there is a continuing debate in EA, and in the world.

I'll not chance my arm further than to recommend a Search EA for "in1933" -no space is deliberate.

Resist the political temptation, but the personal aspects are worth airing with care?

(BTW, IMHO Mr Leno has handled his recent transition with a dignity, an example to us all when dealing with difficult transition.)

IE has a good point.

Never read it, never watched it, don't care to.

I let my boys watch "Caligula" when they were about 12 or so.

Oddly enough, the most backed-up watch-again bits?

The gore and murders. Not the sex.

I watched little bits of GAME OF THRONES here and there and it's definitely not a story for a 12 y/o. THey kill off a kid in the first hour or two just because he "sees" something he shouldn't. How is that a 12 y/o's story? And the big hulking Dude who has the nubian army in the south likes to have doggie style sex or anal intercourse (I don't know which) with his concubines in public.

My BRother thought is would be wonderful to let his 4 kids watch ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW when they were young and to this day if you ask they will tell you they weren't prepared for that movie.

When I let them (as kids) watch EMERALD FOREST (a John Boorman movie) I made sure they understood what all the nudity was about. This was a movie about a 6 year old being abducted by a tribe in the Amazonian Jungle and the natives wore next to nothing.

IE: (and Paolo, I think you'll like this):

Do you have Netflix, even Canadian version? Look for a documentary called "Clean Flicks". It's about a group of people that opened a series of stores (in Salt Lake City, surprise!) that rented "edited" versions of Hollywood movies.

They bought copies of the 'official' movie, then they'd edit out (big blocks or deletion) sex stuff, dub-out swears... but frequently leave lots of gore.

The stores were HUGELY popular. They got away with it because they bought proper licenced copies, and supposedly (mostly) rented only 1-for-1 copies of their edited versions.

But then Hollywood finally (after a few years) sent the big guns and shut them down. But the biggest franchiser/member of the CleanFlicks organization re-opened using a legal loophole and was very successful for a while...

... Until he got busted for paying for sex from a 14 year old girl and being in possession of underage porn.

Oh, Karma, you so wacky!! :)
