I was talking with an older lady this morning. She and hubby show up for the 5 am coffee klatch. She happened to open up this morning that she suffered terribly from depression which began with menopause. She had tried all kinds of medicines and was at wits end.
My first thought was maybe a shrink would help, but I really don't know. Anybody have any suggestions for a female person who has tried a lot of different meds for depression with absolutely no success?
Thanks

Re: Depression
Things that make men happy do NOT make women happy, and it is all but impossible for a man to accurately guess at what would really fix this depression problem for a woman. Think about the reverse situation, even though women are typically thought of at the nurses and men the fighters in our society, when a man has a depressing problem - a woman is NOT the person to ask for the solution (female voice here: "Go shopping! That always cheers me up!")
I observe that women often are made happiest by social activity and social status, they actually like talking - mostly to other women and about other women. Men can be very happy with some of the most anti-social activities, hunting (alone, or with a buddy but NOT talking much), fishing (again, alone or with a buddy but NOT talking much), tinkering in the garage or shop and usually alone, and if there is a buddy there you can bet a man likes to not talk very much.
So, I am guessing, taking a shot in the dark, but I would suggest no drugs or alcohol, but LOTS of people, people people for a depressed woman. People and social status are the things that mean a lot to a woman (at least that is what I think).

Re: Depression
My first thought is has she seen and shared this information with her family doctor? Or her OB/Gyn to share her issues. We all know how a drop in hormones can effect some. I think a round of blood work to see where her levels are would be important. A check for anemia, thyroid and other systems of the body may show a problem. Women certainly have some depression after menopause and that should be addressed if she checks out fine.
